My daughter has a 97 camry 4 cylinder and the alternator went out so I replaced it. The battery light came on so I charged the battery and then started the car and disconnected the battery to see is it would die, it didn't until I put a load on it. Is there something I am missing or does this not work on foreign car.

You should first start out by having the battery tested. Most auto parts stores can test batteries. Once you know that the battery is good and your connections are clean and tight use a volt meter and measure the voltage at the battery terminals with the engine running. Should be somewhere around 13.5-14 volts.

Just some advice to save you some money: Don't disconnect the battery on a vehicle that is electronic fuel injected or has electronic feed back carburation while it is running. Doing that will send a voltage spike though the electrical system and can take out sensitive electronic components. That test is obsolete unless your working on something that has points in a distributor.
