98 Nissan Sentra Won't Start, Occasionaly Sign In

Year:1998
Make:Nissan
Model: Sentra GXE
Engine Size: 1.6
Mileage:127,000

Hello everyone,

Here's the problem. Car had run without issue the last year(25k miles) I've had it. Wednesday I drove it to work and when I went out to leave for the night it wouldn't start. Interior lights came on, radio turned on, the car made its usual beeping sounds but no grinding or clicking from the engine when I tried to start it. The engine was silent. I had it towed Thursday afternoon and when the tow guy let it down off the flatbed he tried to start it and it started right up. It had been starting normally on command all day yesterday and today. The mechanic checked the connections to the starter and the cables from the battery and told me he could find absolutely nothing wrong. I picked it up this afternoon, drove it home (25 miles) and parked it in front of my house. I turned the car off and immediately tried to start it again, and It's back to not starting. Same symptoms as Wednesday night.

I've tried to start it in Neutral, tried jiggling the wires from the battery to the starter which I'm guessing is under/behind the engine because I can't see without getting under the car.

Anyone have any idea what's going on here? Any suggestions on things to try? When I started it at the mechanic's garage it started right up and made no unusual noises.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Bill

Seems like you get nothing from turning the key to start which is when you need to test it for what is dropping out and where. If it just all worked your mechanic did what I think most would do.

It will remain an IDK till you catch it. See if power gets to trigger wire at the starter WHEN it does this. If yes and starter doesn't react I'd blame the starter if not back thru neutral safety switch or clutch switch if a standard back to ignition to where it isn't being energized to just trigger starter,

Sometimes the starter solenoid contacts go bad. Have someone tap on the starter while someone holds the key in the crank position. If the starter takes off when you tap on it, needs a starter.
