98 buick century wont start

i have a 1998 buick century custom with a 3.1 v6. the starter failed after a re-manufactured starter/solenoid assembly was defective starter two just clicked even when i jumped it so it probally is not the battery, the wires are clean (sanded) the person who took off the original(forgot) how the wires came off and i never had a chance to look or label them (my wife's) cousin and three days after he went home i am still trying to figure it out PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I did that and all it did was click repeatedly. after that i un-bolted the starter and set it in the flywheel housing and watched as my father-in-law tried starting the engine and the gear comes out and wont spin

i took a pair of jumper cables hooked to the battery and ground it on the starter housing and touched the positive clamp to the other post and the small post and it worked the way it was supposed to once i got a good connectionto the post that the starter motor is hooked to

Then you need to check all your connections in the car because your doing the exact same thing in both instances.
