The "ABS" warning light comes on (intermittent) on my Chev Astro Van. The dealer says it needs a new ABS Computer (EBCM). The cost is over $900. The GM part is $740, the non-GM part is about $500. A used part from a salvage yard is about $300. I don't know anything about installing it - it sounds lke it has to be coded for the particular car, you can't just buy it and plug it in? Independant shops won't touch it - if they installed a used part and the brakes failed they would be liable. They propose to buy the new GM part and install it - costs about the same as the dealer installation. Any suggestions? Has anyone else encountered a failed ABS module?

Did your dealer diagnose this by scanning the system or are they guessing? If it really needs it - see if the junkyards will install it - many do and they warrant their work and parts. Just a thought that might lower the expense. Also - call GM # in owner's manual, and see if there's a recall. You might be surprised! Just FYI, if light stays on you should still have regular brakes with their full potential. Good luck with this one,

The dealer scanned it, said the EBCM relay was bad. You're right about the default, the light is on about half of the time, the brakes operate as regular brakes. A junkyard that has an installation shop sounds like a good idea. The junkyard that had the part is about 300 miles away, they were prepared to ship it, so I quit looking - now I will do some more searching locally. And I'll check with GM for recalls, thx.

Does anyone know if the ABS Control Module has to be programmed after it is installed, or can I buy one and plug it in?

GM should loose about 10 billion dollars over this. It's too common, and the default mode is ok but they have three times with customers and family failed and went to the vibrating brake pedal mode - and one caused an accident! No one hurt thank God! Funny how the fuse blew on a GM I own (smirk) and I won't put up with the defects and don't wan't any car/veh of mine deciding how to stop! If you can't drive -- DON'T!! is my opinion. I don't mean you personally, just that we expect way too much from our cars and the resposiibility is with the driver NOT the car! If can handle regular braking action, wait for the recall that will destroy GM. I'm ticked because this almost killed my mother with a failure. GM has a toll free # in your owners manual - call and complain! I have spent over an hour with their engineering dept and got no where. It's worth registering a complaint. They know damn well there are problems with their ABS and just will wait till the death toll adds up to more than a recall. I hope GM is snooping in on this site. You should be safe with the light on, and fix it if that's what's right for you. Keep your bills and papers - you will be reimbursed. Sorry for such an angry post, but It's obvious I'm mad about this problem! Be well - stay safe,

Where does the All Wheel Drive get it's signal that the back wheels are spinning and the front wheels are not? Does the ABS Module send a signal to the AWD Box and tell it to lock in the front wheesl?
