Hi everyone, I have a 1997 firebird and I'm having a really hard time figuring out whats going on with my brake lights. Here is the deal so far. For a long time now I would have people telling me that I had lights out on either side of the car, but when I would back up to any kind of window, or have someone stand in the back while I hit the brake all the lights would seem to be working. Then the problem started to become worse and I would see it for myself. The strange thing is the lights would periodically work and not work, and the problem was not just on one side, but it would switch back and forth. I took out all the bulbs and checked each one, and the sockets. Then just as a precaution I changed all the bulbs, and then a couple months ago I changed the brake light switch its self. After changing that I noticed that the lights were working great! But then after a couple months now none of the brake lights work except for the third brake light on the spoiler (that one has never given any problems as far as I know). Two thing I should also mention that might or might not help is that my sockets for my turn signals in the front seem to have some scorching on the plug its self (they still work fine though) and my cruise control stopped working right around the same time that people started telling me about this brake light thing. If anyone could help me with this I would totally appreciate it! Thanks a lot!

Re: Brake Light Trouble Sign In

Tough one!! The cruise control is designed to shut down with brake liights so it's getting some signal.

A few thoughts here for you.....

* Check that things are grounded properly

* You may have a defective new brake light switch but that's not consistent with your third brake light acting up.

* If you have lighting for a trailer check all that out.

Don't know what else to say but good luck with the fix, T

Re: Brake Light Trouble Sign In

Sweet, I'll check the grounds out today, I seen on a webpage that there is some wiring under the drivers seat that goes back to the brake lights. Not sure if its true or not, but that will be the place I check. One thing I also noticed was that when the brake light switch did get replaced and the lights were working the cruise control still didn't work... I think maybe now that I think about it I'm having a couple different problems!!
