CRV battery keeps dying Sign In

Hi all -

I'm having a recurring problem on our 2006 Honda CRV. A couple of weeks ago, we stopped for lunch at a drive-in, leaving the ignition in the accessory position for the radio. In no longer than it took to eat, the battery went completely dead. We jumped it & it started right up. I immediately took it to a local parts store and had the battery checked. The battery tested good, as did the charging & starting systems. I took it home - and that night cleaned the terminals, coated them with di-electric grease, and re-tightened.

Today, our kids went to the car while we met with teachers after school. They listened to the radio 15 to 20 minutes. When we went out, the battery is toast. Won't even attempt to start. Took it back to the parts store & got another good bill of health.

It's not throwing diagnostic codes or warning lights, so there's no feedback there to indicate what's wrong.

Would anyone have suggestions on where I might look to find the problem - or an idea of what might be going on? So far, this has happened where we can easily get a jump. I doubt we'll continue to be so lucky.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Is this still using the factory radio system?

If that is still the OEM stereo then you have a bad battery, regardless of what the pimple faced kid with his electronic toy says.

Yep. It still has the stock radio. The only add-on has been a satellite radio receiver that plugs into the 12v outlet.

Wow - your description of the parts dude was amazingly accurate. Did forget to mention the attempted, but not quite there moustache & goatee.

So - this battery is still under warranty. How can I convince our little friend and his gadget that the battery is the problem here? Both times I've taken it there, it's been right after a jump. Should I let it drain there on their parking lot before I go in to have it checked? Seems like they've told me that it had to be fully charged to be tested.

I don't know how you are going to convince him unless you get it tested elsewhere and get a printout. If this is a new battery, did you skimp on it and buy one with less capacity than needed?

Re: CRV battery keeps dying Sign In

nope. didn't skimp on the battery. actually went for the recommended capacity and the longest warranty period they had. It's the wife's car, so I try to do things right. Mine - that's another story.

Well - thanks for the input. Since it goes fine as long as it stays running, it doesn't seem possible that it could be the charging system. Battery seems to be the only possibility to me too.

Thanks again,
Steve

Re: CRV battery keeps dying Sign In

Regular automotive batteries: May I suggest NOT running anything when engine isn't on and an adult at the helm? It's not meant to sustain a drain as would specific batteries "deep cycle" as for RVs, Marine etc. You may also have a problem with the clamps on this getting full power of the battery so testing battery with those off might test OK but from the outside of those clamps with load not enough get there. They can look good and not be right there,
