I have a 2002 Cavalier with 51,000 miles. The blower motor only works in positions 3 and 4, NOT 1 and 2. Is there a way to tell if my problem is with the switch or the blower motor? I wouold prefer to not replace both.

Neither. The problem is likely the blower motor resistor; these resistors have been a problem on GM’s for sometime now. You’ll find it under the right side of the dash on the heater box housing, close to the blower motor. It’s held in with two small bolts. Dan Canadian "EH"
