Crown vic no start with key Sign In

2008
Ford Crown Vic
police
4.6
158k miles

I have a 2008 crown Vic that all of a sudden stop starting with the key I can jump a wire from the started relay to the battery and it will turn over and start just fine. I also tried hammer times of pen 86 and 30. Just a jumper wire and it starts just fine with that, so add a loss on where to go from here traced everything back and all wires seem to be put on a new starter and solenoid because I thought it was a solenoid. still same problem

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

You need to be real careful with that jumping out stuff. You touch the wrong contact and you'll fry your computer in a heartbeat.

What are your electrical skills? Are you able to tell me whether a contact has power or ground? Do you have an LED testlight that can detect power or ground?

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

I’m not pro electric guy by any means. That’s what I’m worried about is frying pcm. Or maybe it already had been. I do have test light. Thanks.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

I asked about a specific kind of test light. You need to be able to identify either power or ground. I can walk you through this if you have the ability to do what I ask.

This is like what I'm talking about. It's a powered LED test light

Oh gotcha. Yeah I just have regular power test light. I’ll see if I can pick up one of these.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

It sounds like you have identified the pin numbers of the relay so lets do some testing.
Remove the relay and test the sockets of the corresponding pin numbers. You may need to use a pin or something in the socket if the testlight is too fat to reach the contacts.

Pin 87 output to starter. Will read ground when tested
Pin 30 Power supply for starter. Should have 12v at all times
Pin 85 should have ground at all times
Pin 86 should show power when the key is held in start position

Let me know what you find and we'll go from there.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

Ok! Pin 30 no power. I’m guessing that would be part of my problem!

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

OK, then you need to look at the 30A fuse #105 in the underhood fuse box.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

It does not appear to be blown/bad, but I don’t have another to replace with at the moment.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

If your test is correct, then that is your problem. That type fuse is very hard to tell.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

Guessing my test to be wrong. Still same issue. I’m going to look at my Trs and check it maybe. I’ve tried starting in gear/neutral though but no luck. Will keep chasing!

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

The power for pin 30 comes directly from the battery, to the fuse, to the relay socket so there is nothing in between.

Pull the fuse out and test for power in the socket to make sure the fuse is receiving power from the battery.

There is no point in chasing the neutral switch as that was resolved when you found power on pin #86. That runs through the neutral switch.

The testing I gave you systematically finds the problem area.

Fuse does appear to be powered via battery.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

It's a straight shot from there to the relay.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

Make sure you are checking the correct relay. The starter relay is marked in the previous diagram.

Here's your wiring diagram

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

Will double check. The more I think about it maybe I’m looking at pins wrong and do have power to 30. If so what would it be?

Then you retest all pins

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

I do have power to pin30. And all others seem to be functioning as well. Have tried numerous relays also and same issue. Any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

That's just simply not true. You can't possibly have all the circuits working correctly and tried multiple relays and still doesn't work.

You're doing something wrong. Those results can't add up. I'm just wasting my time if you are not giving me accurate test results.

Just curious, but does this have an aftermarket alarm system or remote start system installed?

Re: Crown vic no start with key Sign In

I would expect that would show up during relay circuit testing if it did. He's claiming all signals to operate the relay are present. I doubt that.
