ECU and corrosion

Can anyone with ECU repair experience comment on whether or not corrosion is a common cause of ECU problems or failure? Thank you.

Corrosion is a high cause of problems wherever found. Common? Depends on where and what exposed to of course.
Here's inside one but pic probably wont show - sorry.........

Which ECUs?
GM van PCM had issues with the aluminum housings corroding externally, especially with road salts. Internal corrosion really only happens if water is able to leak into the ECU. Most ECUs are sealed, have conformal coatings, or are potted.
Modern OEM manufacture ECUs are very robust.

Thank you for your reply. Regarding this pictured example and other corroded PCB's you may have seen, are these from older vehicles? If so, what is the average age of the vehicles where you have seen corroded PCB's?
The other reply from discretesignals suggests that recently manufactured vehicles offer very robust corrosion protection. Would you agree?

Corrosion will only occur on ANY control unit if it is exposed to elements. As a rule they are not exposed unless some other defect causes it like a water leak in the vehicle that lands on or near the unit. This would be an exception.

I have heard and seen corrosion in ECU's from various OEM's. Isn't potting used to reduce corrosion?
