I have a 1992 Ford Ranger with a 3.0 engine and the fuel gauge won't work when i unplug the connector the gauge goes to the full mark so i tried putting a different sending unit and checked the connector plug but there is no corrosion is there anything else i can do to fix the fuel gauge.

Make sure that the fuel tank and the sending unit have a good connection to ground. If you’re unsure; add a jumper wire between the sending unit and the body. If that doesn’t do anything; remove the instrument cluster and test the fuel gauge circuit leading into the cluster. You’ll have to also remove the tank unit again but leave it connected electrically; so that you can work the sending unit’s float arm. You’ll need to find terminal 12 of connector A of the cluster plugs; it should be a yellow/white wire. Connect an ohmmeter to terminal 12 and ground. With the float at the empty position there should be approximately 22 Ohms; at the full position approximately 145 ohms. If you’re getting these readings; the problem is in the instrument cluster’s “slosh module” or the gauge itself. A slosh module is there to slow the sending until signal down so that the gauge doesn’t do a dance every time you slow down or speed up; causing the fuel to slosh around. If this is the case and I’m not sure on this but I don’t think the gauge or the slosh module are serviceable without replacing the cluster. Dan. Canadian "EH"
