I have a 1998 Buick Regal LS and I am replacing the fuel pump with an aftermarket fuel pump in which I ordered but have not received yet. The aftermarket pump has a different female connector for the main connection on top of the fuel pump (NOT the fuel pressure sensor connector) than the OEM AC Delco pump that was pulled. The aftermarket pump comes with a wiring harness that needs to be spliced in to replace the male connector that fits the OEM pump. I would like to avoid any splicing, looking at the OEM pump I noticed and was able to remove the OEM female connector as it simply snaps onto the pump.

My question is can I safely replace the female connector on top of the aftermarket pump with female connector from the top of the AC Delco pump as from the pictures of the aftermarket pump it looks like the female connector can also be removed and the receptacle where it snaps in looks the same.

My main concern is , is the connector on the inside of the pump that connects to the bottom of the snapped in female connector universal, is it wired the same?

Re: Fuel Pump Electrical Connector Sign In

Wouldn't blame you for saving a buck on now a 20 year old. Then and newer I still suggest OE pumps, whole units and bite the price. Should be marked OE or maybe OEE the extra E for "equivalent if you don't run low on fuel never touch it again if not this could be some routine replacement you don't want. Reputation somehow is horrible for aftermarket pumps for GMs not sure quite why,

Ps: You may be able to just swap wires and do fine just be sure each is still doing what was intended + lube that connector either way........

NO!
That connector was packaged with the pump for a very specific reason. There is a known problem with the old style connector and it MUST BE REPLACED when the pump is replaced.

Just be thankful that they identified the problem and gave you the fix with the pump.

Re: Fuel Pump Electrical Connector Sign In

Thanks Tom for responding.
I'll try the aftermarket pump, I don't know which will fail first the pump or the 20 year old car. Fortunately the pump wasn't hard to get to, I didn't have to drop the tank, there is an access cover located in the trunk, took about 15 mins to remove the pump. It is suggested to remove the back seat, but I did that on a Buick Century, although it gives proper ventilation and more room to work, it was a waste of time.

Hammer, thank you for replying, I will defiantly NOT use the old connector now knowing what you wrote, good information.

Thanks again.

Re: Fuel Pump Electrical Connector Sign In

Most of them come with waterproof, shrink crimp connectors to splice with.

If not, cover them good with electrical tape.

Good catch Hammer - now coniefl pay more attention and sorry wasn't aware this exact model had a change built in only that plugs for the things were THE problem on more than one.

Do NOT make a mistake with this! Use right products and procedures to the letter - duh - you are dealing with a fuel tank. Grease is sold or comes with it for electric purposes is water proof.

Tape scares me but is rated on package what it can tolerate or find better that is marked. The age of this isn't the point nor saving a buck it has to be right,
