Level sensors Sign In

I don't have a car problem but I have a serious design question. Why does my 2000 Dodge Caravan have a windshield washer level sensor but not a coolant bottle level sensor? The washer fluid is about the least important function on the car and the coolant level is one of the most important. My heater was acting slow recently and that made me think to check the coolant which was indeed low. Coincidentally the same week, the washer fluid "alarm" was beeping at me. The coolant level is actually not that obvious (when checked manually) as it is in a low, shaded area..hard to see the level. I assume that other models have the same situation.

That is a good question. You may have to talk to a Chrysler engineer to get your answer.


If the coolant level is low, you probably have a leak. You might want to have the coolant system pressure tested.

Thats a good question...

There are some cars out there with level sensors for the radiator or coolant bottle if its part of the system but none if it's just an overflow bottle...

The best answer I could think of is that they assume that you will be keeping any eye on all the important fluids before you drive. like you mentioned, washer fluid is probably the least important fluid. But most cars don't have level sensors for engine oil, tranny oil, p/s fluid, etc...... some do but most don't.

I guess they take a "preflight" approach to it.....The critical fluid need to be check regardless so sensors aren't needed because you are regularly looking at those ones and least important one gets a sensor due to in not being part of the preflight check so it can get missed & it's a pita when you are on the road, hit a bug and the squirters are dry......
