Shut off when brakes applied

1994 Saturn sl1, 177,000 mi,1.9L, 4cyl, 4dr. My 94 Saturn still shuts off whenever I apply the brakes. I have checked for vacuum leaks, checked the booster, and even the wiring in the dashboard since I had a new cluster put in before all this started happening. I was told it is probably something electrical, since it shuts down the engine only when I apply the brakes. Sometimes both blinker lights come on (on the dashboard) when I step on the brakes. To make matters worse I even started out with a empty gas tank, and started afresh with the new winter gas from Wawa, and before I could even get off the lot, the car would not even start unless I pumped it 100 times to get it going and then when I got on the highway,I had to open it up and let all old fumes and gas out. But the gas definitely created some new problems, am I close to solving these problems?

Do you mean that if you just coast to a stop it won't stall? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

That would tend to indicate some type of short in the brake lights. You might try unplugging the brake light switch to see if it still stalls.

I no looking at a part doesn't make it good or bad, but It seems as though a piece ( bushing, maybe) may have broken or fallen off the spring loaded plastic cylinder and it disengages from the flat platform when the brakes are applied.Could this be the problem and is there a replacement part? I'm going to try and unplug to see what happens. I did unplug and tested to see if it would shut when applying the brake and it didn't. So I know I need to replace the switch. Thx PS about that winter gas, is there a quick solution to that?

Well, why don't you unplug it and find out as I suggested.

Quote">>PS about that winter gas, is there a quick solution to that?<<" Many formulation of gas exist. Near sure the idea for winter formulations is to be more volitile when cold than another formula and shouldn't be THE issue at all, T

Okay Hammer, I did as u suggested and your test proved correct, so i replaced the switch with a brand new one. Same problem, only more pronounced. $20 (bucks) I can't get back. Anymore bright ideas?

Just wondering, but could this be a bad ground? Turning the brake lamps on causes the fuel pump to quit since they probably share the same ground pack in the rear? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thats worth a close look and a voltage drop test or so. I know the Rangers share grounds on the fuel pump and the taillights, and have seen one that would misfire and stall when the lights were turned on. Ford sure had some funny ways of wiring up circuits. Put a fuel pressure gauge on this and run the car. Have someone hit the brakes and see what happens to your pressure.

LOL I would've preferred to donate the $20 to U guys, instead of wasting it on a toy part that broke before I got it right.

Thanks for the exploded view of area to be focused on. Now that i have confirmed that this is the problem, is there a remedy/solution/part to cure this problem for good? I tried taking as much slack and movement out by using electrical tape, but it only lasted for a day. Thx
