1997 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.0 (I think, I don't think its the 2.4) 142k Ok so the problem started about a week ago with the check oil light started flickering on and off (but only when the car has warmed up to where the temp is in the middle of the gauge, and only when my foot was off the accelorator), and I checked the oil and I was a little low so I put a quart in and it seemed to deal with it for a while that night, then it came back on again, now I didn't need my oil changed for another 200 miles or so but I decided to just take it in the next day and hope it solved the problem. It didnt, but while I was in there the technician told me that my battery was putting out about 75 cold cranking amps less than it should have. So I was going to take the car into the shop when the light stopped flickering on and off and instead now my speedometer will flutter once the car warms up. I'd really like a general idea of whats going on before I take this to a mechanic and he just sees dollar signs. Any help is greatly apreciated.

Proximity; First, your oil light was blinking, but now, the speedometer is fluctuating? Have you thought about calling a Priest? The blinking oil light could be as simple as a faulty oil pressure sensor. Have the oil pressure tested, mechanically. If it is okay, an oil pressure sensor is quite inexpensive and it has to be removed to test the pressure, so you don't waste the labor for the test. The speedometer thing...? Is you "Check Engine" lamp illuminated? I'm thinking Vehicle speed sensor...is the transmission shifting normally? I'd have the battery and charging system tested by a reputable shop, not a quick lube type business. JMO. (I wasn't implying that the quick lube shops aren't reputable, just that they are good at what they do, but..) Loren SW Washington
