Hi guys, new here, looking for some help from a talented sparky.
So I've been working on my 1985 Toyota Hilux, trying to convert the cable driven speedometer to an electric speedometer.
I have installed a Hall Effect sensor onto the transmission, it simply bolts into place where the original cable was.
I have wired up the Hall Effect sensor to 12v IGN and chassis ground. Then wired up the speedometer to a separate 12v IGN and ground. And wired the signal wire from the senor to the speedometer.

The problem I'm having is that I can't get any speedometers to work, I have tired one from a 1997 Nissan Terrano and from an old Land Rover Discovery. Neither worked. Both would power on so I believe the IGN and ground are good. But neither would read speed.
Both speedometers I have tired so far have 4 connections:
- IGN (I assume 12v)
- Ground (GND)
- Signal In (SIG or SP IN)
- Signal Out (2P or SP OUT)

I really need fast help because I need to get the Hilux back on the road so please if anyone as any idea I'm all ears. If you need anymore information or any photos just ask!
Thank you!

For what possible reason are you doing this? If you want a metric speedometer and odometer or the other way get the whole dash unit or just do the math.

You aren't likely to change this to electronic for love nor money and have both speed and distance measured correctly.

If troubles with cable just fix it. They have just cables you cut to size if the case is still good.

Left or right hand drive would likely be different,

T

Re: Speedometer Conversion Help Sign In

What type of hall sensor? Some hall sensors are pull up circuit types and others are pull down. The speedometer circuit can also be a pull or or down design also. They both need to match not only in circuit design, but signal amplitude also. There is a lot more to it than just attaching some wires.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Re: Speedometer Conversion Help Sign In

You're just wasting your time and money in this futile attempt. You're lacking a major component that all of these circuits have in them and that is some sort of processor that converts that sensor signal into something that the speedo head can read. Different cars do it different ways.

Re: Speedometer Conversion Help Sign In

I gathered from his post that it was a gear driven sensor.
