electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

I took my135,000 mile, 2000 dodge durango sport truck engine size 4.7ltr to the shop because the wires harness that connects to the computer (ecm) burned up due to squirrels nesting and biting the wires. The shop told me 500.00+ to chNge the wiring harness and computer. I told him that i purchased a computer online for 169.00. And i coud attach it myself o jus need the wiring done. He quotes me @ 400.00 dollars jus to replace the wiring harness. Am i being over charged??

Not really. That is a lot of work and everything has to be soldered and heat shrunk. He's probably punishing you a little because you want him to do just the nasty part of the job. You do realize that the PCM has to be programmed after it's installed.

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

There is no labor time for replacing a wiring harness. It is pretty much time spent. With the cost of the harness and time to install it, that estimate is probably pretty close.

Ok, thanks alot, i was just curious! Yes i bought a pre programmed ecm programmed to my exact vin number frm a online dealer my father bought bis from. He purchased his plug and play ecm that was already flashed and it worked like a charm.

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

Ok so i received the vehicle back and examined the work. I noticed that he only replaced one clip of wire grouping of the 3 clips thT connect to the ecm. I asked him did he replace the whole wite groupin all the way dwn he claims yes. I got my vehicls towed to another shop to do the power steering pump. I was called to the back by 3 mechanics, they asked me what did the shop replace and i showed them. The mechanics told me that the shop most likely went to a junk yard, snatched a wire clip frm another durango. They said the one wire grouping they clIm they replacsd was only snipped Bout 4 inches from the connector and spliced together. They even unwrapped the electric tape and showed me. They told me that i was over charged and that if the wires were burnt further down then they cut it could also damage the new ecm. Is this normal to by a junkyard connector and sploce it to the old harness?? The shop also told me they charged me 1 1/2 hrs to go get the part from the junkyard. Then 3.5 hours to splice the one connector from the junk yard to the snipped wires.. should i go get an estimate from other shops and start filing a small claims case because i no for sure frm 4 ase certified mechanics that i was overly priced.. pls help???

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

Not sure how your post, posted twice? Not the issue. Just my comment that you have a splice with electrical tape - that alone is hack work. If that was covering a soldered in, shrink wrap wiring insualtion then electrical tape I could buy it. 3.5 what hours for that!

Legal issues are not part of suggestions and opionions here. How could it be as none of anyone here is there witnessing anything? - T

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

The electrical tape was pulled back Nd the wires were visibly twisted, connected together then electrical tape was wrapped around it. Yes youd right about the legal comment i jus feel like i took my vehicle to a known shop and they cut a piece off a car and at tached it to the old wiring to make it look as if the whole wire grouping was replaced. @ 90.00/ hr plus 1.5 hrs to drive to the junk yard, find the same model and part it out.

Here I thought they were changing the entire harness and not doing a patch job.

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

Yes it was 500.00 dollars if i brought in my ecm i purchSed seperately .
So i told them i could put it in, it was only 3 screws to put it in. He then dropped it to 400.00 to replace wires. He never changed the harness he just snipped and spliced few wired and taped it all up to mKe it seem like it was all new.

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

$500 is legit to change an entire harness with a brand new one. You got taken on a hack job. It can be done to use a good pigtail from a salvage yard, I've done it in the past myself. So long as the plug is in good shape and free of corrosion its good to go. But then it must be soldered into the harness and the solder covered in heat shrink tubing. This obviously didn't happen. Twisting wires together and wrapping in tape is beyond cut-rate work and you have a legitimate complaint about what has happened. If you want to pursue legal action you need to be talking to the guys who you took that truck to who showed you what this guy did.

Re: electrical wiring harness to ecm Sign In

If the wires are just twisted together, this harness needs to be repaired properly.
Any circuit, it's important to have the proper resistance value. With computers it's even more important to the point where if you are splicing a bad wire, you have to spice in the same length you are removing...and it needs to be connected & insulated properly....

If you aren't experiencing any drivability problems or SESs now......You will be.........
