1932 ford hot rod with Chevy 350. Nostalgia style car with Delco 12v 20A Generator and Remy point style regulator. About 6 years and 12k trouble free miles on Gen and regulator, until today. Have recently had slow cranking after engine is shut off and soon restarted. Optima batt has full charge. Engine has stock cast iron exhaust so the new starter and solenoid is NOT subject to usual Chevy with headers starter heat related problem. Wiring to generator ( armature, field, ground ) is 10ga and in good condition. This a.m. the generator ground wire became smoking hot as I tried to start the car, only when cranking though (not with the ignition "on" and not cranking) I replaced the wire and it still got hot . When trying to crank the motor it seemed as though the battery was low because it cranked slowly or the bendix would just clik. Last night the car started ok with the usual slow "hot" starts. The timing is set at 36 deg. Ignition is Pertonix and in excellant cond.. Possible generator internal ground problem, regulator? Used old Glenn's manual to wire system but dont know how to trouble shoot it. HEEEEEELP !!!

?? Not sure about this little ground wire but I'd be checking or upgrading battery cables and both end connections making sure a strong block to body ground is intact or add another. You can get just braided eyelet end ground straps which help with creative vehicles and all of them really. The sluggish - warm start suggests a tight engine and less than adequate amps from battery to starter. Can be improved with heavier gauge cables. Ask for (1) gauge or cables for six volt systems should solve that, T
