ignition cylinder replacement issue

Hey all. I have a 99 F250 7.3, and the ignition was getting sticky (it was taking a bit of finesse to turn the key to start), so I ordered an OEM replacement. The swap was simple, but aside from the pre-start dashboard lights the truck won't start. I swapped back to the original cylinder and all's back to normal. As far as I can tell I do not have transponder chips in the original (one key is just metal), so there shouldn't be any programming needed. What am I missing?

For now some basic questions + thoughts: > Did new cylinder ever turn properly to all positions? If not that alone a problem with correct part. > What do you mean the old or original was getting sticky? Just how and was the metal of it all worn out with cuts? It's still a lock cylinder should turn or issues down the line of some sort? > It may be a chip metal one or not it sounds like no starter motor so a no crank with new set up - right? I thought most stopped the fuel pump but allowed cranking. > Being a truck/truck I'm not sure what was required or just available in '99 models included in mandatory items/features of it as weight it could carry increases. > The short of it is I'd try to fix the reason the 1st key was sticky and works can you tell now that you've been there looking at things? T

1) The new cylinder did turn to all positions correctly. 2) Sticky: it takes a trick of the wrist to get it to turn (always has ever since I bought it over a year ago). When I next take the cylinder out I plan to clean it and see if that helps, but I suspect there is some wear. 3) I saw somewhere that some affect fuel, while others will affect initial start. 4) Without taking a deep dive into each model I am not sure. 5) Weather's not permitting atm, but will report back when I take another look.

What is the new switch doing? Is the engine cranking? Are the dash lights operating as normal? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

You said when you jumped out the starter with a screwdriver the starter spun but didn't engage the flywheel. Is the same thing happening with the key? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Slow down - confusion here and with the 01 Cavalier thread, post #3 says starter jumped out with a screwdriver didn't engage - this one works with the old cylinder unknown if lack of fuel pump or if starter will not crank engine YET or it's hard to see if that's in here - I didn't see it?? Tom

@Hammer_Time There's no screwdriver or flywheel involved here, just trying to swap out an old but functioning ignition cylinder with a new one. @Tom_Greenleaf I don't understand what you mean about fuel pump. To reiterate: I have a 99 F250 HD 7.3, truck starts fine as is, just the ignition key takes a little wrist finesse to turn from the OFF position. Decided to get a new ignition cylinder, purchased OEM. With new cylinder the dash lights come on when turning to START, but will not crank at all. Original keys do not appear to be PATS, so I do not believe the non-cranking issue is due to needing reprogramming. Next good weather day I will be examining the original ignition cylinder for wear.

Yeah, that's what Tom was talking about. I got you mixed up with another "no crank" problem. You will probably need a helper to find out if the starter is getting power at the trigger wire when the key is held in "start". The circuit is pretty basic with a neutral switch and a starter relay.
