power window dead?????????? Sign In

I have a 1988 gmc c3500. The passenger window does not work. I have both door panels off I check the switch on the passenger side and I have 12 volts going to the switch. When I push the button to go up or down I am getting voltage to the other wires on the back of the switch(total of 5 wires). When I disconnect the wire to the motor I get one wire with voltage going up and another wire getting voltage when pressing down. I was thinking the motor was bad at first however when I hook up a brand new motor I have the same problem. What is going on? A bad switch???

There are 2 wires going to the motor. I have 11.8 volts going to one lead when pressing up and 11.8 volts going to the other lead when pressing down.

I tried the new motor before I put it in the truck. Where Is the ground attached? Do both switches have to be in good order for it to work?

Yes both switches have to be good for the system to work. All grounds for the circuit are supplied by the left front switch.
When the switches are in the rest position, all wiring leading to the motors are connected to ground; other then the power feed from the fuse at the switches. When you push up or down on either of the switches, you are removing ground from one of the wires and applying power to it; depending on up or down request.
Check the wiring in the conduit in the left front door opening; the wires there are famous for breaking.

If it helps ...... The wires reverse polarity for up and down. If they don't get ground at the same time they show pos then it won't work. Look for one common problem which probably isn't but could be the switch itself at that door. Driver's side does override all and not sure how they do that but it could be denying ground to all the others when those are used like a setting so kids don't play with windows. What is this thing anyway and how many power windows?
