sears analyzer connections Sign In

I have a 1952 ford v8 6volt positive ground. I want to use My old Sears Analyzer to measure RPM and Dwell. I've seen many suggestions on how to hook this tester up. I have been able to get the RPM'S but not the dwell with accuracy. Some have said to use an external 12 volt battery. If you have an idea I would like to try it?Thank you for your input!

Own a '47 6V, pos. Ground! Just think backwards it will work. Coil + instead of coil neg (-) but TMK didn't give you "dwell" number you still went by gap - look at where points rub the 8 sided cam, get that on tip top can set dwell with a screwdriver to check later a wide range OK. Just cranking tells dwell without cap on at all or running AND look for the nubs to adjust it they are there. Need points held snug not too tight and recheck when tightened.

You still don't need it. Use gap is all you need. Put a slight smear of dialectic grease on upwards turning side of the part that rides the cam it will last another 100 years.
Dwell when you get it running shouldn't vary with RPM more than about 5 degrees or distributor bearings on shaft is worn you'll never get gap right it's advancing timing don't go too far they don't make high octane anything for this even low compression used 93 high compression was 98+
Lead never was needed so relax it was a hoax that it lubed valves. It just made cheap junk fuel behave like higher octane - just FYI haven't forgotten most of this yet but time will tell :-)


Sh*t sport those were a cake walk.


One more: You can align points they'll last 100K don't toss good ones new ones unknown old ones if no transfer are right new a guess! Hmmm still didn't forget that!

One more: I have that analyzer before the Ted Williams department of Sears ROEBUCK & COMPANY was near hand grenades, shot guns, waterproof fuse and XXXXX gunpowder by Dupont! Still have some if all goes wrong blow up the car! Tom

I still use a Ted Williams model fly reel that i bought new back in the day and I"m still younger than you guys! Seriously, thanks for your help. I'll be out in the driveway in the morning! You guys are great(and funny too!)

The serious note on 6V and the positive ground thing. Most things you just reset your thinking what is hot and not it works. You get in trouble when you involve another vehicle like jumping the things just stay positive to how the batteries are - really think on it so you don't mess up.
Watch out for light bulbs will blow if you use 12V power for moments for a jump shut them all off and do NOT use cars/vehicles as much as possible the 60s started alternators you have a generator whole change in how they charge and are regulated.
The other is distributor and electric motors around then would have oil cups - look for them including even things like water pumps and who knows what else throughout things.
The age of it in general think of square drive fasteners and again that's 8 point sockets/wrenches or open end. Gravity feed for water and fuel things. Fuel bowls you can clean and see when it's time to. Drains in fuel tanks, carbs (updraft ones) and on and on.
Pressure not used much or at all. Vacuum motors and switches.
Never ends but do watch for things that spin, wheels, motors and more for LEFT HAND THREADS!
You'll find grease fitting on all kinds of things - grease those things.
Most things that move just make sense and are adjustable also required re-adjustment as routine. That part of things in general people got sick of it took up lots of time so lots didn't get done was the problem to eliminate that for each decade since more and more was use once and throw it out for new now hard to find good reproduction items that are as well done - that's the snag of newer anything little by little,

Great information Tom! It's a shame that anyone under 60 won't understand a word of what you said! Too bad! One good thing about progress, when you drop a tool when working on a modern engine, it doesn't fall to the ground! Get my"point"?

Just chat now: Trivial junk> Q. Which way if you could see it is electricity flowing to and from a lead/acid battery
1. Out the negative to return to the positive?
2. Out the positive to return to the negative?
A. It's OUT the negative!! That's why they thought "Positive Ground" would be the way but it doesn't matter it's at the speed of light.


Test: Take a common wood pencil sharpen it of course. Now you thought a spark plug had power going to the center and jumped to the small "ground" electrode right? Wrong. Take wire off so spark jumps that you can see off end of a plug. Now put that pencil in the path is which way it flow. You'll be surprised it's backwards!


It makes a flash stream for the direction it's flowing still doesn't matter if everything is set to just that. It wasn't so made it all the same by 1957 all vehicles to be 12V Negative Grounded to stop the madness,

Artron: If you wish hit me with a PM on this. To do that click on my name and in lower right corner will show the option. We could share some info that is so OUT OF DATE would be it's own site just for obsolete things.
It's OK I'm familiar with the era of this stuff confused everyone THEN! Way too easy to make mistakes so it was made a standard shortly later by model year.
The end answer is YES you can just takes a lot of my own ENDLESS typing some fool taught me how before electric typewriters and no #1 on a keyboard! True - go look at an antique you used a lower case "L" looked like #1 instead. They did use 1/4 and 1/2 and had a "C" for "cents" meaning the pennies.
The skinny is there were quirky things all along computer everything just another and getting old for the changes daily on these damn things or self changing what I typed - this site or my device I don't know which?
Want to thank Comcast my cable server. I go pay the bill in person on now self serve machines take cash, checks, cards or scan some funky mark sucks money out of somewhere. Machine didn't work so attendant had to use another took 3 tries and he WORKS for this crap!


Just laugh it's going to happen till it all fails and we'll be the only ones to know how to light a match for light before those are outlawed! Tom
