stone dead battery

1999 chevrotlet lumina 3.1 vehicle was started and moved out of driveway and parked on street.next day nothing would work door locks etc.this morning I checked voltage at battery and had nothing.connected battery charger and when plugged in amp meter spiked and circuit breaker in charger tripped.removed battery and put on charger and charged normally.checked resistance between pos. and negattive and have 3.8 ohms.removed positive connection and measured between post and ground and had open.would like to find short/draw before putting battery back in.I've never checked resistance betweeen pos. and neg. before with cables removed.do not know what is acceptable.90,000 miles. thanks for any replies in advance.

I don't know where you got those tests from but they aren't telling you anything. Charge the battery and then have it tested before putting it back in the car. battery is 1 month old from sams club energiseer made by exide in good condition. sorry forgot a couple of facts.

those tests are trying to find short which seems to be a dead short befoe arcing the negative connection when reconnecting the recharged battery battery

first thing is a moderator should check your credentials.I have been a heavy equipment mechanic for 35 years.I own several battery load testers ,carbon pile and electronic.if a battery charger is connected and turned on and the amp needle spikes and kicks internal circuit protection this would tel you a short exists.battery charges normally when disconnected.what was asked was what positive cable resistance to ground would be too low.I would appreciate it if you would not reply to this post anymore since you are obviously a hack.

Im just another hack . 30 +years exp , 10 of them in military electronics. Once won award for designing a more efficient aircraft battery . Your breaker most likely tripped because the dead battery was drawing charging amps in excess of its rated output .A slow trickle charge would have been the correct way to go . I have known HT many years and he knows his way around automotive electrical system . I agree ,your tests as written in the beginning of your post do not make sense .Remember ......you called us.
