1997 Honda Civic CX 1.6L w/auto trans. 237,000km Hi, my check engine light came on today during normal driving conditions. When I turn the key to ACC the light comes on then turns off for a quick moment then stays on steady. There doesn't seem to be any change in how the car is working. Can somebody tell me what the potential issue may be. thank you

Have the computer scanned for trouble code(s) and post the code(s) here Then someone here can assist you Autozone or any major parts store chain will do this for free Don't let them sell you any parts ..just read the code and post it

thank you for your quick reply, unfortunately I do not have a Autozone or a parts store in my area that is willing to scan the code at no cost. The check engine light has also since turned off. Is it common to have a light come on temporarily? or is it that whatever caused the check light to come on is no longer a problem (at least in the short term).

It's a malfunction indicator light. If the light went off it means either the problem isn't present at the moment or the circuit with the problem is not active at the time but the PCM will store the code in memory. If you don't have anyone in the area that will read them for free, which I find very surprising, you will have to either pay someone or purchase a code reader yourself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
