I have a 2011 Malibu with, 2.44 engine in it. The motor has 110,000 miles on it. The check engine light came on so I read the codes and the were P0014, P0016, and P0017. I replaced the variable timing sensors and the P0014 code went away but the other codes are still there and I do not want to replace anymore sensors than I have to, if anyone can give me an idea what to do I would appreciate it.

Has there been any other work done on the engine besides replacing sensors? Which sensors did you replace? How does the engine run? Are there any abnormal noises? What weight engine oil and how frequently was is it changed? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The codes mean that the crank sensor is not in time with the cams. It needs to be checked out further but the timing chain may have jumped a tooth. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I replaced both of the variable timing solenoids, and now the crank sensor. All of the old sensors had metal shavings on them and I thought that might be disrupting their function. The oil that is used in the car is the recommended 5-30, and is changes at an auto shop when the oil indicator says it is at 10% or less. The cars exhaust sounds louder under the engine compartment when accelerating, but there are no other noises. When I drive down the road with my engine scanner plugged in the car runs great like there is nothing wrong, I think it bypasses whatever is bad. That's is what makes me think it is a bad sensor. I appreciate the help, let me know if you need more info.

I was thinking the timing jumped a tooth, but I began to think it was a sensor because when I plug in my code read the car runs great. I replaced the variable timing sensors and the crank sensor, all three of them had metal shavings on them so I put new ones in. if the timing jumped a tooth would it run like new with the code reader plugged in? Another thing as soon as I unplug my code reader and stop then accelerate the car idles rough and it accelerates slower.

Metal shavings isn't a good sign. That could mean something is coming apart inside the engine. Maybe those shaving have affected the operation of the camshaft actuators. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
