1997 Nissan Maxima: My check engine light came on a few days ago, so I performed a diagnostic check on the car, and the code read "cylinder 2 misfire". My initial thought was that the spark plug could be bad. Might that be the cause if I'm not having any major problems? Or what else may be causing this? If there are any "experts" with some advice, I'd greatly appreciate it!!

There are many things that can cause a misfire; spark plug(s) are the number one thing that people condemn; the easiest to do and for the cost; replace them?
Now for the other things that can cause a misfire well the list is quite long.
I won’t try and list them all but anything that will stop that cylinder from getting the proper air/fuel mixture, the compression of the air/fuel mixture, ignition of the air/fuel mixture, the exhausting of spent air/fuel mixture can and will cause a misfire.
That’s just the basics of any engine whether it is a one cylinder or 12; it’s the suck, squeeze, bang, and blow theory of a four-stroke engine.
Now add electronics into the mix where a computer has the ability in a millisecond to change fuel mixture, ignition timing and with variable cam timing and displacement on demand, the computer can even change compression ratios on some models.
So as for what causing the misfire, hell I don’t know? LOL (sorry)
I know it sounds like such an easy question but believe me at times it’s not.
It could take a series of tests and a process of elimination to find the root cause? Or stick a set of plugs in and see what happens?
Dan.

Check the following for a missfire on clyinder # 2 .
1 Spark plug, cracked ,old .
2 plug cables , condition will ark out if old .
3 distribitor cap .
4 injectors ( do a injection test )
5 compression test, Not low.
Check rotor and cap they tend to give the most problem
I'm sure its one of the above as you have only a problem
on the #2 cylinder .
