I have a 2009 GMC Yukon XL 2WD. 150xxx mileage.
The car engine light recently came on, along with this other traction symbol, and very much "STABILITRAK OFF" reading comes on the dashboard. I ran the scanner and it picked up code U0101.
SYMPTOMS: Since these lights occurred, whenever I put the car to Reverse or Neutral or Drive, it will not display what letter I'm in. It will only show the configuration letters but no marking. Also, the car picks up slower when taking off from a complete stop. The car will not up-shift to gear when it gets around 50mph (not sure what gear that is) but it'll just redline at that point. There is no problem cranking up the car though.
Well, I have been reading many sources online about the U0101 code, particularly youtube. It will likely appears to be a electrical problem like bad wires or loose cables. But worst scenario is a failed Transmission Control Module.
What I've done so far: the car battery is reading 12 volt. Transmission oil and the motor oil are good. I have observed the wires under the hood, including under the car. I haven't really look deeply into the hidden wires, but so far the wires I looked at are good.
I do need you guys help to determine what the real problem may be, and maybe someone had this problem before. At this moment, I am leaning towards to replace the Transmission Control Module TCM. My plan right now is to order a TCM and take the module over to the GM Dealership and have them flash it or reprogram it, then I'll just swap out the TCM myself to save money. However, now that I experienced the car won't shift into gear around 50mph, hopefully the transmission or any of the Shift Solenoid aren't the cause of the problem. But according to the scanner code and my research, I'm 85% sure it is a bad TCM.
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please holler back. I'm trying to save money if it's something I can avoid taking it to the shop.

Which engine? Which transmission? What other modules in the vehicle can you communicate with? Are they storing any trouble codes? That's an expensive guess to replace the TCM just because someone else did.

Communication codes are difficult to solve unless you see something visually such as corroded connectors, connector terminal/pin problems, or wiring issues. It's important to see who or what is communicating on the data bus to get an idea what is going on. Sometimes you may need to use an oscilloscope to monitor data bus voltages to see if anything is goofy with the CAN signal wave forms.
Power and ground issues to a module can cause a module to not communicate with other modules, so those things need to be checked out also using service manual information and diagrams.

Might be just personal experiences but I find it hard to trust auto mechanics and dentist lol You might want to tone that down since it is the same mechanics that you are asking to help you for free. You have scanned the PCM only because your Harbor freight scanner is not capable of communicating with the TCM. If the TCM has also stored a U0100, the trans goes into limp mode which is what you are experiencing.
That's interesting.
Well, what should I do now? Buy a better scanner?

I don't think you are going to be able to do much of anything with a Harbor Freight code reader and no electronic experience. This is not a DIY type job.
Even if you try just throwing a TCM at it, I don't think they can flash it without the car being there.

They just quote me $820 for parts and labor. About $450 for parts and the remaining is labor. Perhaps I found a website advertising the TCM part for $350. I'm debating right now whether to have the shop install it or I do it. I'm worrying about the torque specifications for the tiny screws on the module. Anyone knows where can I locate the torque specs?
