Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

2015 Toyota Corolla S 1.8 65,000.

I am getting engine codes of p0300 & then it says cylinder 2. Engine is idling rough. I replaced plugs & coils & cylinder 2 still runs the same when I unhook the coil. So it is in cylinder 2. I even went & got a torque wrench to make sure they were installed with the right amount. Please help! I bought this car at an auction last week & can’t even drive it yet everyday I spend my time working on it & spending $$$$. Today I am going to check the fuel injectors & then maybe replace the intake manifold gasket? I am a woman with not a ton of skill other than what I have done. I have changed an intake manifold on a Ford before & plugs, coils, oil & air filters. Should I just give up now & take it to a shop? Can I drive it there?

Thanks for anyone’s assistance in advance! Stay safe!

Auction cars! That's why they are there this young - trouble cars. It's done so see what's next forget retorquing plugs for now you know it's that cylinder so maybe a compression test.
Try not to toss parts at it, it's only about 5 years and low mile (if true) shouldn't be needing all that without some unknown reason yet.

? Test away what you can many parts outlets rent tools for free and info (take with a grain of salt) for full deposit for safe return. ASK.
Last choice IMO get help is probably in the cards > this is backwards but get a towing club that will cover more than just 3 miles now that covers YOU not what vehicle you happen to be stuck with. Most a bargain if you never need them discounts on lots of things just being with them.
Back: For compression all plugs out at least ones abutting that one look for even #s state what they are PSI wise.
Your question to drive it or not? It's probably too late if driven or just run way too much there's a risk to converter may or may not already be trashed yet to be found out. I doubt that could pick on one cylinder - just a doubt.

Hate to say you take a huge risk with auction cars usually trades with those miles and age there's a real reason it ended up there. Used cars worth a dang are hot right now selling well and costly at least local to me just noticed. Signs with cash today for your car in front of places all over the place in the few places I notice. Not if trashed though - they'd know in seconds I suspect you now have one but hope not.

Carry on see what you find before sending it out know a little more if no luck choose the right place as best you can does NOT have to be a dealer in fact suggest NOT rather an independent that's doing well,

Thanks for the response! I will keep troubleshooting & then if I can’t figure it out before everyone closes today there’s a shop around the corner from it. I did get the history report on the car & was in an accident where it rear ended someone with only bumper & grill damage, airbags did not deploy. Thought I was buying it to replace a bumper, grill & paint, unfortunately not what I thought I was getting myself into. I’ll let ya know if it’s a tragic ending or not. 🙏🏻

I agree with Tom. Your next step is a compression test to find out if it has internal damage before you spend another penny on it.

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

OK: Get going on what you can find. If running for the accident would think running OK (or hope so) at the time. Look for what might be unplugged, wire or plugs broken and so forth. Some accident scenes I'm NOT involved but first responders to those cut battery cables who knows if more damaged just from that?
Bumper plastic stuff should be well available for this not totally costly. Clips as whole sets more than you need also out there. Damage beyond that you'll find out. IF radiator support bent in it's harder you may need some real help. Paint is costly to do right - your call just know if you try it and lousy it will be tons harder to do right.

IDK why picking on the one cylinder now would be looking for testing just the wiring to that one might not be right at it but back more and hidden??

Good luck - you're brave there are bargains to be had or nightmares hope the first works out and it's a real deal when done,

So I checked the fuel injector & it’s fine for cylinder 2. I got some new codes today. P0352.....P0302......P0300 & C342D. I replaced the coil yesterday & the wire harness all looks new?

Fuel injectors good
I got new codes today I put them in my response below.
All in regards to cylinder 2 ignition coil b
Don’t know what c342d is & can’t find it online reader says manufacturer control

So, I guess you're just not listening to us since you ignored our advice to do a compression test first.

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

Refresh approach again: Compression as we are saying! I'll add check fluids, oil and see if level is reading high?* Coolant and if it holds pressure too?*
Why: This is an accident car not worn out in a split second. It's just unknown how traumatic the abrupt hit and stop was IDK oil all rushes to one end, coolant items pushed then pulled IDK may have sucked in some or oil "locked" for a wild splash inside. I'm thinking the worse to rule out first would show with compression and the fluid checks. It ran for you just the guess time for fluid to return what they could but left damage?

These things are unknown still just have to rule those things out or it's not ready for tossing parts at it yet or maybe not this engine. IDK that either at all just suspect anything is why it was salvaged to begin with,

Ok I will check. Coolant was low when I got it so I first flushed the radiator, refilled it so I new the mix was right & put in a new thermostat & then changed the oil while I charged the battery.

Got the compression tool & getting set up to test now.....

What the hell does that mean? We are looking for a pressure reading.

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

Wow! I’m offended! I was an analyst the last 12 yrs & my job was to analyze data, then come up with solutions . I can’t do that without data. I need to keep my 💴💰too, I was let go recently due to pandemic cutbacks, I had an 18 state territory & then we couldn’t travel by plane anymore
Even tho I researched & collected data mostly thru a computer but also using all my 5 senses & competitors it’s no different than using these same computer hands on car parts or testing tools/practices to get the end result. I don’t believe I can’t do anything, give me a visual & I will
The foreign mans 4 min video I watched gave me the insight to run the test with no experience but that’s another story.

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

I checked all the things you mentioned & nothing seems to have any leaks or broken/unattached or unlatched hoses or clips. It all looks really new & not brittle

One thing I haven’t mentioned is when I removed plugs 1st time to replace, cylinder 2’s plug was fried & much darker, corroded & the gap was off.
3 of the 4 coils were dirty but the 1 from cylinder 2 was dirtiest & it looked somewhat corroded. After cleaning them all, 2 still looked worse than 3 & 4 did b4 they were cleaned.

I Noticed today when I took the plugs back out it did look like they had fuel/oil on them, leaning more towards fuel but the first day I took out the old ones they were dry as a bone & no fuel/oil/residue on them. The car did sit for 2 months or more after the accident.

Still working on a full charge on the battery too but it seems to be getting there it started with no charger on it after being charged for only about an hour. I read last night that a battery can make a Corolla misfire if it needs to be replaced & can’t charge or doesn’t get fully charged.

I was able to start the car with it having 6.4 amps on the battery. Could this be my entire issue? How does it affect the engine & cause misfires being drained or low?

Yesterday I took out & cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner. Not sure if that got it clean or if it’s shorted out? Can this misfire cylinder 2 & how?

I found 4 min video of how to do compression test but guy had a thick foreign accent, hard to understand. I don’t know if I missed him say but I never saw him unplug fuel pump fuze and I did not unplug mine either so I don’t know how this affects/influences/sways the PSI#’s I got for each in the test, all cylinders read 120 PSI Once it started

I also purchased a multimeter to try to find out if there is a short in the wire harness to the 2nd cylinder in the coil &/or clip but I couldn’t find any instructions/videos how to do/check this online & wasn’t sure what to look for or how to determine if it was getting the right amount of volts to it or not. To bad I can’t test one wire at a time for each coil.

At the end of the day with no progress other than new codes, new tools, more time/$ spent & I’m still sitting with a misfire going into day 11. Dad wants the car off the street yesterday (really the minute it got there). They live in the city 45 mins away from me & r afraid untagged its going to get towed away & cost more 💵💰💴

So I threw my hands in the air & called some local shops that are highly accredited & supposed fair prices, see if anyone could look at it today. Everyone was full & busy trying to get cars out today but I could drop it today & they’d get to it next week sometime. So I left it 8 blocks away from my parents house & now sit here & pray.

Let u know when I hear! I guess I’m praying for an intake manifold gasket replacement, wiring harness or some kind of sensor they can find in minutes that takes moments to install!

Thx for all your help today even if I failed at accomplishing the end result. If your free to answer any of my questions I appreciate it.

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

Try to calm down everyone! There's enough stress all around to go around.
One tidbit of a quote of last longer post ">
One thing I haven’t mentioned is when I removed plugs 1st time to replace, cylinder 2’s plug was fried & much darker, corroded & the gap was off. <"

That's a disaster sign IMO for a car with this now horrible history with just 65K on a maybe 5 year old (it's been tied up a while in those years) most (IMO again) of these would be fine if nothing was done since new and driven at least carefully.

Coolant found low?

Bring out the CRYSTAL BALL PLEASE: This may have run a while (we don't know) after the accident - overheated from a leak and self destructed engine. That accounts for coolant loss, spark plug with THE GAP OFF that looks different than the rest! That's a fatal thing to find for the miles - again IMO.

120 compression is marginal to even run but cold engine, maybe some fuel washing at least same is info still inconclusive wanted a wet test too meaning oil added not done apparently or two sets of #s would be had?
*********************************************
The question now is what to do with this thing it's turning out just a nightmare?
It's a choice either give up now and cut losses or IMO (again) send this out and get it back all done at any expense up to and including another engine ?

Given my own choice which it isn't I cut losses now. Lessons learned not to buy Auction cars unless you can take that risk said up top and first.

OF ALL THINGS - PEACE FOLKS! There's enough troubles all around for all of us let's either fix this or move on - PLEASE!

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

Got news today & isn’t good. Cylinder 2 is getting antifreeze in it. Compression was 125 in all three but cylinder 2 was at 115. He scoped cylinder 2 & sees it coming in. Radiator is holding pressure. He thinks they left the car run after the accident & said either a blown head gasket, cracked head or bad motor. Any other tests I can have them run to see if it’s a head gasket? Told me $600-$800 to tear it all out for head gasket check & we might find a cracked head. $5k-$5,500 for a used motor with. A 30 day warranty.
My worst nightmare. 😢😢😢😢

Re: Help with Corolla p0300 cylinder 2 code rough idle Sign In

Evidence found - that guessing part is over. Hmmm? Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't it jive that it overheated after an accident we don't know just the fan(s) not coming on is hard but not like a high speed super fast heat up.
It's a guess till head is sent out this one case suggests slow overheating just maybe only wiped out the gasket and slight warp that could be good as new again.

With that I'd risk it that it's that but be sure it done well, fan(s) work when they should while apart do any other services for it too.

$600-$800 guess is just that till apart is just how it goes. Used at this new if exact or better miles and knowns about one fine but that's a lot of bucks IMO the 30 day thing has been a standard for used for some time is right for some I'll say NOT this time.

You know this car a little better I'd be sure the shop and tech is fully up to doing it right and fix the original knowing that when apart it could be found cracked or something no known while intact.

Sorry it happened but better to know and now hope for some good qualified help to just end it and be out of your worries for a good long time,

Tom
