We have a p1009 pop up with the VSA icon on a 2009 accord with 86k on the odometer , 2.8 as I remember . The dealer said it can be from a number of things , aside from any major operations is there anything I can look into on this ? Thanks .

The engine choices are 2.4 or 3.5. I went with 2.4.

DTC Troubleshooting: P1009

DTC P1009: VTC Advance Malfunction

NOTE:

- Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information. See: Computers and Control Systems > Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

- If DTC P0341 is stored at the same time as DTC P1009, troubleshoot DTC P1009 first, then recheck for DTC P0341.

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

3. Start the engine.

4. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P1009 indicated?
YES - Go to step 5.

NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.

5. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

6. Remove the auto-tensioner. See: Drive Belt Tensioner > Removal and Replacement > Drive Belt Auto-Tensioner Removal/Installation

7. Remove the VTC strainer (A), and check it for clogging.

Is the strainer OK?
YES - Go to step 8.

NO - Clean the VTC strainer, replace the engine oil filter and the engine oil, then go to step 10.

8. Test the VTC oil control solenoid valve. See: Variable Valve Timing Actuator > Removal and Replacement > VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Removal/Test/Installation

Is the valve OK?
YES - Go to step 9.

NO - Replace the VTC oil control solenoid valve, See: Variable Valve Timing Actuator > Removal and Replacement > VTC Oil Control Solenoid Valve Removal/Test/Installation then go to step 10.

9. Inspect the VTC actuator. See: Cylinder Head Assembly > Overhaul > VTC Actuator Inspection (Except PZEV Model)

Is the actuator OK?
YES - Check the VTC system oil passages, then go to step 10.

NO - Replace the VTC actuator, See: Cylinder Head Assembly > Overhaul > VTC Actuator, Exhaust Camshaft Sprocket Replacement (Except PZEV Model) then go to step 10.

10. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

11. Reset the ECM/PCM with the HDS.

12. Clear the CKP pattern with the HDS.

13. Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure. See: Engine Control Module > Programming and Relearning > ECM/PCM Idle Learn Procedure

14. Do the CKP pattern learn procedure. See: Computers and Control Systems > Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview

15. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC P1009 indicated?
YES - Check the oil passages at the VTC system, then go to step 1.

NO - Troubleshooting is complete. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting.

I forgot to add that there's a one time clacking sound upon start up after that code and VSA comes up , FYI And the dealer replaced vtc actuator on aug. of 2019 at mileage 78,000 , I'm a little intimidated by that check list but the dealer is busy and I won't bring it in till tues. but I'll see what I can do , it's not a daily driver . Thanks .

The code is telling you that it basically has an oil flow problem. They make those things sound complicated but look at the picture and see if that screen is plugged up.

I shall look into it along with more research , I guess my one question is why it comes up with the VSA and why the idle is high , and why the rpms surge at lower speeds like it's searching for gears when it comes up . This all happened while traveling 100's of miles on vacation , of course .

That's a definite indication of an oil pressure problem.

Variable Valve timing is operated by oil pressure so any issues in the oil system can effect valve timing and valve timing can effect idle speed and other performance issues.

There is also the chance that the code has nothing to do with the other issues and that is something entirely different. That's why you have to correct known issues before trying to look beyond them. You never know what domino effect one problem can have on another.

Re: P1009 w/ VSA ,Accord 2.8 Sign In

The dealer was backed up 2 weeks they said there was little chance anything would be under warrantee , I took it to a shop I felt I could trust the guy seemed familiar with the problem , he did some cold starts with an oil pressure gauge but found no problem there , then he replaced the solenoid valve because the vct tensioner was done 2 years ago . . After he got the parts he took it for a few rides to see if it was good to go , the wife will be running a round the next few days with it and we'll see . we'll pick it up later today , I forgot to mention the screens . I could have done it if I had a garage and my youth .
