Service airbag message. Sign In

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS,2.2L engine. Mileage:49052.
After going through a heavy construction area, and both front wheels going over deep holes in the road at the same time, i now have a red seat belt icon on the display, and a message saying, "service air bag". By pressing one of the buttons (left), the message sometimes disapears for a long time, other times, it will keep coming back on repeatedly. There are two buttons below the display area. One serves as a check on the mileage you are doing/have done, and it also displays oil life, coolant temperature, and gas mileage in tank. The other button resets everything, and that includes the oil life when an oil change has been performed by a qualified mechanic. The other console where the cd player, radio etc is situated, has a seat belt light. Normally, when the car is in motion, and the passenger seat belt is in use, the light on the middle console will say "airbag on", but when the "service airbag symbol and message appears, the middle console will say "airbag off".

Has this something to do with the jolt the car received and it has affected one or more of the sensors on the computer? If so, what needs to be done, and how much will it cost to repair?

I am intending to sell the vehicle soon (with free extras like a full gas tank and other freebies), so i need to get this car repaired and ready.
Thank you.

Erasing the message doesn't repair anything. It'sa there to make you aware of a problem. You need to have the airbag codes read to determine what the system is seeing. For this you will need a professional scan tool capable of accessing the airbag module.
