1986 Chevy 7.4L 454 Fuel Pump Sign In

I have a 1986 Chevy 7.4L 454 V8 in my RV. It has 33,000 miles on it. Saturday I bought a new fuel pump for it. I removed the old one and when I went to install the new one, I couldn't get it in because the internal rod wasn't retracted. I tried to "crank" over the motor to get it to retract, I've tried removing some of the plugs to relieve engine pressure so that I could manually get it to retract.... Nothing. Any suggestions? Anyone?

Have you tried a magnet?

Thanks for the response.

I have not tried a magnet. I assume we're talking about a strong, industrial magnet that would "grab" the rod through the engine casing? Would you have ideas on how to use a magnet for this application? I'm willing to try anything.

Oh yes! I hate those and never could get grease or a wire to hold the pushrod up dependably as I guess I'm too slow with the pump.

Trick if you can....
Jack up the passenger's (fuel pump side) so it looks ridiculous but be safe! Whole side tilted higher gives you more time to get the new pump in.

Trust me it works but dear God be safe about it - jackstands on blocks - whatever it takes so it can't fall,
