1988 Dodge Aries idle problem

1988 Dodge Aries, 2.5 liter, 130,000 miles. The car starts and idles ok until the A/T Shift lever is engaged in any way. Then when put in neutral or park the idle races high until either re-engaged in gear or stopped and restarted. Using the OBD I receive fault codes 12, 13 & 24. I have a Haynes manual and know what the codes are indicating and that the TPS is probably the problem however.... the car was recently involved in an accident that took it over about a knee high pile of gravel, dirt and rocks. Then engine compartment was full of dirt and dust and several pounds of fine to course gravel. I have since removed, repaired and replaced the oil pan which had a hole punched in it. Changed the driverside axle and engine mount and changed the brake pads(just because I had everything off and they were close to be needing done anyway). My question is should I just go ahead and replace the TPS or look for something else that may be damaged. The description I get in the manual just says the TPS voltage is too high or too low. This problem did not exist before the accident and I don't see how this part was damaged. Could it just be coincidence? I would like to avoid buying another $30+ part if not necessary. TIA.
