I have a 1993 Lincoln MkVIII with a 4.6l DOHC V8.
The car has 155k miles.

I bought the car about 2 weeks ago. At first, the engine was running mostly fine, with only minor sputtering once in a while which I assumed was the bad gas ( it sat for almost a year ). It got progressively worse and now i get very sporadic acceleration. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes I get almost no acceleration. Many times, my RPM's will rev up to 3k, but I still get little acceleration. When I idle, it is rough but steady and when I rev my engine, I get a clean rev with only minor stuttering. I replaced my fuel filter, spark plugs, cables, and I had a mechanic test my fuel pump and tell me the pressure is fine before and after starting the engine. Any ideas what else could be the issue?

If the engine revs up but the vehicle isn't going anywhere, that sounds like a transmission problem.

BUT,
before going after the transmission you have to make sure there is no engine drive-ability problems affecting the operation of the transmission.

You might want to start by performing a compression check just to see if you have some sort of mechanical problem going on.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
