1995 Cavalier Stalls on the Road

I have a 1995 Cavalier LS that has begun to stall in traffic after driving for a while usually in hot weather. It stalls when I begin to slow down for a light, etc., and then it starts right back up but chokes down again when I put it into gear. I had a 1988 Cavalier that did basically the same thing and it turned out to be caused by some kind of environmental gadget under the hood. I found out from a forum like this that you could disconnect this gadget without hurting the car or the environment, so I did, and the car ran fine then for as long as I had it. My problem now is that I don't know if the 95 has the same gadget, and worse yet, I don't remember exactly where it was or what I did. Does this ring any kind of a bell with anyone here? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

This would be your overdrive sensor. Unplugging it will stop the car from stalling out on you but will turn on your Check Engine light. It's not terribly expensive to fix. And yes your '95 Cavalier has it. It should be somewhere on the side of the engine. Not always in the same place for every car.

Thanks, roadw4k. I'm sure you're right, but I took the 1988 Cavalier I mentioned in my original post to a repair shop (Goodyear, I think), and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. That's when I went online. After I disconnected the plug on the '88, I didn't get a check engine light, so I don't know what's up with that. I did find a similar thing on my '95 and disconnected it a week or so ago. So far, so good. It hasn't stalled since then, but it hasn't been out much since then. We'll see. Thanks again for your help.

I just bought a 91 cavalier and I am having the exact pproblem. It ran ok, untill it failed smog and I had a new oxygen sensor put in. Then it stalled out, like you described. NowIt passed smog, but it don't stay running. I also noticed the radiator/engine cooling fan does not come on either. Oh, and when it ran for the few miles it did the engine light was on. Is it a coincidence I had the same problem with stalling after the smog work? What do I do exactly? Now that it is smogged, can I undo something to make it work again?

JoJo, Don't know is you've got the exact same problem or not. If so, all I did on the '88 and the '95 was to unplug a little blue plastic gadget on the lower front of the engine. Both cars stopped stalling and there was no difference in the way they ran after that. Good luck with yours.
