I am haveing soooooo much trouble with this security light thing. I was able to clear code and get car started again, but i am over mesing with this. Does anyone know of a way to get rid of this system all together? Car starts then stalls, I found a way to clear codes and get it to run again, but for how long not sure? If I can just shortcut around this security system it seems like it would be so much easier.

You can't entirely get rid of the system because it is integrated through the operating system although the most common failure is the sensor in the ignition switch and that can be bypasssed although the rest of the system has to be operational.

If you find the black wire and the yellow wire from the passlock sensor in the column you can solder in a 2.2 K ohm resistor and then attempt to start the car.It will stall don't turn the ignition off.Let the ignition on for ten minutes or until the theft light goes out.Turn the key off for ten seconds then attempt to start the car.If it now runs you have been successful. If it doesn't you either made a mistake or there are other problems besides the ignition lock cylinder.

WOW that sound like alot of effort. But first you said some times it just the ignition switch? does that mean the key switch in the coloum?

It's the ignition lock cylinder which isn't such a minor thing because it contains the Passlock cylinder. It's not a lot of work to bypass it. It's just a matter of finding 2 wires and splicing a resister between them and then perform the rerlearn. Your alternative is to let the dealer diagnose and repair it for a few hundred dollars.

Re: 1996 grand am security light Sign In

i do have one more question in reguards to that 96 grand am. OMLY when makeing a right turn I hear a rubbing or light grinding noice. Checked all places to see NO signs of tires rubind. Ran car in reverce turning wheel ALL the way in both directions and no noice at all. And noice is not heard when making left turn. If making right turn and accelerate VERY slowly then no noice but drive normaly, and stop then make a right turn then there the noise is again. any ideas?

You need to jack up the front end and check the wheel bearings first. Check the backing plates behind the rotors and see if one is close enough to touch the rotor when the wheel leans a little. If it's too close, just pull it away a little bit.

You need to start a fresh question on your own car please. We don't address multiple cars in one question.
