1996 mitsubishi lancer 1.6 glxi cyclone ohc 65,000kms + Car cranks-up when attempting to start, battery is ok, distributor is clean & w/o moisture, sparkplug cables ok, air cleaner is ok. Would the fuel filter be the culprit, being unable to deliver fuel for combustion? Car run smoothly the day earlier.

get a can of carb cleaner and spray into intake(throttle body)and if car starts and stalls then it is a fuel related issue.if not get a spark tester from local auto parts store and check for spark to plugs.if possibel check for injector pulses with a cheap noid light if injectors are accessible.fuel pressure would be nice to know but spraying carb cleaner into intake causes car to try to start or start and stall would give an indication of a fuel related problem.

I would highly doubt the fuel filter is causing this from the description provided... even after years of use when they begine to go bad they just cause a rough idle... Turn the key all the way forward like your about to crank the engine, listen very closly you should hear a drawn out sound from the back of the car, wich would be the fuel pump, if you hear it that checks that possibility off your list, some cars iv noticed if the alternator is bad the computer will not allow it to run, may be another possibilty. Check to see if plugs are foweled extemly bad... also crank on the engine with your headlights turned on, if they dim down to almost dead them your battery might be pullin one over on ya :P
