I have a 1997 dodge intrepid 3.3L. I seem to be getting an intermitent whistling when I'm driving. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. Whistle speeds up with acceleration. With the hood open, the sound seems to be coming from the back of the engine or maybe near the injection system. Not sure. Could it be a vaccum leak somewhere? Car seems to be running as good as usual. Thought it might be the belts, but their good and tight and the noise doesn't seem to be coming from that area. Does anyone have any ideas? Note: not a screeching sound like the belts make, but rather a whistling sound.

It’s likely a vacuum line that has a small hole in it not a large enough hole/leak to cause the engine to run poorly but enough to make your whistle. I’ve have the hose that connects the PCV valve to the valve cover become snotty and collapse and make all kinds of strange sounds. All I can say from here is follow your ear to find the source of the noise. Running your hands over the different vacuum hoses may change the tone of the whistle and help you narrow down or pin point who or what is the cause? Dan. Canadian "EH"

Could it be the transmission whistling? I've noticed it is shifting a little harder than normal and the fluid is full. I have a tranny filter and fluid. We'll change it to see if it helps. But I still think it may be a vac leak since it is intermitent?????

Had a noise once that didn't make any sense and turned out to be the windshield. After a lot of looking around I taped off the windshield with painter's tape and that intermittent problem did not return but owner had to drive with tape for a while which prooved that was it. Every body thought it was engine but it was air speed over the windshield. That was a tough one, T
