1998 Olds Royale 88 engine issues Sign In

Hello, I have a 1998 Olds Royale 88 with a 3.8 motor in it that i just recently install a used motor. I heard the engine run before it was taken out of another Olds Royale 88 with the same year and it ran just fine. After installing it in my vehicle, it ran perfect before I added antifreeze to the radiator. After adding the antifreeze, it seemed as if to be sucking a lot of air from the top radiator hose which seemed really strange to me and ran for little bit and then stalled. The motor did not run long enough to even get hot, so I think that I can eliminate the possibility of a blown head gasket. The compression in the motor was so strong that the starter could not turn the flywheel. I yanked the starter out and was able to turn it but it was very hard, actually the motor that I took out had a similar problem to where the starter housing on 2 starters cracked. Like I said, the motor ran fine until I added the antifreeze. I was wondering if someone had a similar problem and if so, what do they think my problem could be. The motor that I put in has 120,000 miles on it which sounded pretty good when it ran. Thanks, Rainman Frown

First thing is pull all the plugs and crank the engine to see if it's hydro locked. If it is, they have a known problem with the plastic intake manifolds leaking coolant into the vacuum chamber under the upper intake manifold.

Thanks for the reply, I think that just might be my problem. I did take the plugs out and turned the engine and boy did a whole bunch of antifreeze shoot out. I'll let you know the results.

That definately solved my problem, I ended up replacing the lower intake manifold gasket and also replaced the whole upper intake plenium manifold that came with a new gasket because the other one was possibly cracked. My neighborhood auto parts store sold me the intake plenium manifold for $109 plus tax and the the lower intake manifold gasket for $32 plus tax. So with some good repair info and $150, my car is back in good running condition.. Thanks a million
