1998 chevy lumina engine trouble

1998 chevy lumina engine trouble Sign In

This is the guy with the 1998 lumina. This is where i'm at . I pulled the wires off the passenger side coil pac and there was no spark at either cilynder, so I switched that coil with the center one ,but still no spark at the passenger side , so the coil is not the problem. The passenger coil is not recieving a signal to fire . Where is this leading now?

That takes you to an ignition module assuming there is nothing wrong with any of the related wiring.

I pulled out the ignition module and had it tested at auto zone . Ran the test 3 times . everything checked out good . Wiring for the cam and crank sensors look good . If this is leading to the dealer for computer work then maybe it's time for cash for clunkers . The car is only worth about $500.

What Autozone tells you does not mean a thing. Your car runs so the module will test good. That doesn't mean every part of it is good and their test doesn't test much at all. It just tells you if it works at all and you already knew that.

If the coils are being fired at some cylinders and not others, that is the responsibility of the module.

I wonder if I should just replace the module . I hate to spend the money without being sure this is the problem. is there any way to be sure ?

You can remove the coil and use a noid light at the 2 terminals and crank the engine to see if the signal is being sent to the coil or not. The ignition module controls the coils.

SUCCESS !!! Your information about the test at Auto Zone not meaning a whole lot was gold. I took a chance and installed a new ICM and the car runs like new. These parts stores should not even perform tests if there is a chance that the info they give you is wrong . Thanks again.

They do it so they can sell more parts. Their advice has never been too accurate.

One additional point here. Something took that module out. Excessive current draw from the coil is the most common cause.
