1999 Chevy Venture 3.4 V6 extended van (doors on both sides) 199,000 I have removed all the bolts out of my oil pan and the pan will STILL not budge. its so tight just like the bolts are still in there. I have double and triple checked and I have them all removed that I can see. I have removed the starter to get those bolts and on the passenger side near the tire the plastic covers and have full access. I have got 2 different stories on how to remove the oil pan. One says I have to lift the engines after loosing the lower engine mount and more people saying no just need to remove the bolts and use a rubber mallet. please help if you know.

ok, the gasket i have does have any bolts on the short sides, only on the long sides like its in there sideways like the engine. 6 bolts on the both the short sides, casue the side near the transmission has none, but the other side is where that engine mount is, i cant see real well cause its grimed up with grease and oil.

They are in there. The bolts have their own gaskets and fasten the sides of the oil pan to the main caps. The ones on the transmission side are a pain. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I don't believe you will get that pan out without supporting the engine from above and lowering the sub-frame even after you get all the bolts out.. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

HT is right. You need to support the engine using a support adapter, so you can get the mount bracket out and to hold the engine up with the pan off. You don't have to lift the engine, but you can lower the right side of the subframe down enough to get clearance to remove the engine mount bracket. Don't use a mallet. Got confused because I thought you were at the point where you were unbolting the pan to remove it. Yes, because the right engine mount is bolted to the oil pan. Without that mount there is nothing to hold the right side (front) of the engine up. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I just did an 02 Venture awhile back. I'm not positive if they are exactly the same but I'm sure they're close. Like HT and DS mentioned, where are you going to put the blocks to support the engine? The only place to support the engine from underneath is the oil pan. You HAVE to support it from above because you have to remove the motor mount as it connects to the oil pan. I'm with HT in that I don't see you getting the pan off without dropping the frame. It's only held on by 4 bolts. Two in the front and two in the back. Once the frame is off you better make sure you have it supported good. They make a special engine support fixture. You might be able to borrow one from a local parts store. You just have to put down a deposit that is returned when the bracket is returned. I ended up making one. Don't try and rig anything unless you're absolutely sure the engine is supported because you'll be underneath the engine. I had to remove the ac compressor to get my pan off. I just took the bolts out and left the lines attached. Once the frame is off things are much easier to get to and you'll probably be able to get a better look at the 6 side bolts. Trust us, they're there. They're towards the top right below the gasket. They are probably covered with crud so clean up the outside of the pan real good. Just to reiterate. Don't try and take a shortcut on supporting the engine without the fixture. You'll be replacing a lot more than the oil pan gasket and that's after you're released from the hospital! I don't think you have to remove the catalytic converter like it says although I can't say for sure without crawling under mine and looking. I don't see why you would need to. Oil Pan Replacement - Tools Required
- J 39505 Torque Wrench Adapter
Removal Procedure - Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable.
- Remove the engine mount struts from the engine.
- Install the engine support fixture.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
- Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts and set the compressor aside.
- Disconnect the catalytic converter pipe from the engine right side exhaust manifold.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove frame #$$embly.
- Remove the oil level sensor wiring harness connection.
- Remove the starter motor.
- Remove the transaxle brace from the oil pan.
- Remove the engine mount bracket with the motor mount from the oil pan.
Important: Use the J 39505 in order to remove the engine right side oil pan side bolts. - Remove the oil pan and the oil pan gasket.
- Clean the oil pan and the engine block gasket surface.
Installation Procedure Important: Use the J 39505 in order to install the engine right side oil pan side bolts. - Install the oil pan gasket and the oil pan.
- Install the engine mount bracket with the engine mount to the oil pan.
- Install the transaxle brace to the oil pan.
- Install the starter motor.
- Install the oil level sensor electrical connector.
- Install frame #$$embly.
- Connect the catalytic converter pipe to the engine right side exhaust manifold.
- Install the A/C compressor.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the engine support fixture.
