I have a 1999 mercury cougar with a 2.0 Today i had problems with it starting for a while, it didnt seem to be getting any spark. I changed the plugs and it fired right up.. However the ride home the car was sputting and still seemed to be missing a lot. I got home, turned it off and then tried to start it again, the starter was real slow to respond and never fully turned over. Everytime i try to start it now i get one click and nothing. I got the battery tested and it is okay. Is my starter bad? Please help, i dont want to go buy the wrong parts, but im almost 100% my starter is bad

If you have access to an amp clamp, put it on the positive battery cable and measure amp draw when trying to crank the engine. Also, what voltage is the battery at sitting in the car? Have you tried cleaning the connections up to be clean, shiny and tight both on power and ground? You would also want to be sure the ground connected at the engine and the power at the starter are clean and tight. If this is still happening after cleaning all those contacts you would then do a voltage drop test on the power and ground. If it passes the voltage drop test you would be looking at a starter.
