2000 Dodge Neon Sign In

Two days ago I was sitting in the car. All of a sudden the engine started to putter and the temperature gauge was jumping from top to bottom. I stopped the car and the engine was noticeably hotter than it should be. The coolant level was fine. All fluids where proper. The strange thing is that it only does this when the car is in park. It will actually stalls out in park. When it's in drive, even when stopped, it performs fine.

I changed out the plugs, no change. I'm thinking thermostat but that wouldn't cause it to stall while cold in park?????

Any ideas?

Guess: Perhaps ground between body and engine block is weak and just having it in gear improves that. You could try just adding a jumper wire ground to ground (body - engine) and that would tell,

I pulled the fault codes.

P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Low Input
P1495 Leak Detection Pump Solenoid Circuit
P1684 Battery Disconnected Within Last 50 Starts
P0743 TCC Enable Solenoid Circuit Electrical

Looks like I got a few problems. Suspect the first is what caused the sudden noticeable symptoms.

Still points to a ground problem as you said it can run well. If you haven't disconnected the battery it still thought so by the problem I suggested,

Re: 2000 Dodge Neon Sign In

Gave it a shot. The battery did have some corrosion and may have had connection issues. I cleaned it up.

So far everything is running fine. The temp gauge was stuck at cold and would not move the first time I drove it after pulling the battery. The second time I drove it the temp gauge was acting fine. I checked the fault codes again after the two drives and the 0117 is still present. Either the code is still there because it's hard coded or the ECT is genuinely faulty.

Would you agree or do you advise another path?
