Car was garaged during high school. Now I’m off at college in northeast Ohio, the car is parked outside, and the winter is expectably cold/harsh. The engine refuses to turn over on attempted starting, engine repeatedly just clicks, with gauge lights blinking for misfire. The attempted start sounds strong, just the same as it did when the car was garaged nightly and I never had an issue. through jumping it, the car will start, and it will continue to start fine unless left for more then a day. I suspect its the battery, start, or alternator. the battery was replaced within the last three years, and when I attempt to start it, all the fans/radio/and lights will come on. so the battery seems to be an unlikely culprit though I know it is still possible to not have enough power to start even with everything else continuing to work. At the same time, i've heard if the starter was gone, nothing at all would happen upon turning the key, and that if it was the alternator, the car would not continue to run on a jump? I was just wondering if you have heard of similar issues, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

By your description, It's a power supply issue. Not enough power is getting to the armature to crank the drive. If it sounds like its struggling to turn over thats the problem. The fact you can jump start means that the drive is then getting enough power to turn the flywheel. Next time your try to start car, turn off radio, lights, windshield wipers, EVERYTHING. Then see if it still does it. Alternator my be an issue. Get a new battery and get your ALT checked for voltage charge (this is free from nice mechanics) Make sure terminals on battery, ALT and starter are clean, and connected well.
