I have a 2003 Passat and I can't get it to start. We were able to get it to start for about 10 mins after charging the battery. After 10 mins the car idled very low and died. We have not been able to get the car to start since. ( This car has been sitting for over a year. Gas is probably 2 years old.) Do you think that it could be bad gas? Electrical problem? Any ideas appreciated, I'm trying to save money and fix this my self. (The car turns over but will not ignite)

Which engine? 2 years? Why did it sit for so long? Does this have fuel pressure? Might need to drain the tank, make sure it isn't all sludged up inside, and then add some fresh fuel after verifying it has pressure. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I'm pretty sure the engine is a 1.8 Turbo. The car is my fiancees first car and hasn't been used in a long time so everything is still the same as the last time it was used. I'm not sure how to check if it has fuel pressure. What would be the best way to have the tank drained?

? What's with 2 year old fuel and it sat for ONE year? It ran with a charged battery till it went low no doubt and battery if this just sat is junk and it's not charging probably. Not my cars but can check fuel by changing out fuel filter and dump inlet end into glass jar, smell it and maybe pour some thru a coffee filter. May be able to work with the fuel that's in it? Seems more like a battery/charging system issue right away. Where to begin? We know battery is junk or I do by your description. New it wouldn't be good after sitting a year in a car or on a shelf new in a store and really lucky it took any charge at all or started at all. Both issues - fuel and condition of charging system as when it's running and did the battery should no longer be the up front problem but putting out no or no help to keep voltage up would throw it all off an die out which it did, T

You would need special adapters to hook up a fuel pressure test gauge on a VW. Fuel pressure should be around 58 psi or 4 bar. To drain the tank you would need a siphon hose or gas caddy. You could remove the sender assembly and get in through there, but you have to be careful and not get fuel all inside the vehicle. How much fuel is in it? You could also drop the fuel tank and then drain and clean it. Many options, but think about safety since you will be working with fuel vapors.
