(2003 Mercury Sable GS Acting strange). It has been acting very strange. It will stall for a second and restart its self while going down the road.
It also has had the ABS and anti-theft light come on and the flicker off while driving. It also have had the fuel warning light come on with a half of a tank of gas. And now it takes spells not starting and shutters until warm. Have replaced fuel filter. And now it is at a shop because it would not start at all, they though it had jumped timing and found out the timing is fine. It has started ruff for them every once in a while. Very Frustrated

Are there any trouble codes stored in the PCM or the ABS modules? If so, what are the numbers?

What is missing when it doesn't want to start?

Just talked to mechanic. It is throwing a variety codes and they check it out and it is not it. It is also throwing codes that do not even exist. They are trying my other keys out to see if it is the transponder in the key is bad. Every time they reset and try again it gives them something else.

Just curious, but if you have this in a repair shop and professional automotive technician is diagnosing it, why are you here asking us for troubleshooting tips? If the tech isn't able to figure it out, they either need to call for an experienced drive-ability specialist or send it down the road. You aren't there to diag the vehicle yourself and since your playing middle man, we don't know if communications are being twisted.

Because I need my car and although he has been in business for year he has never seen anything like this and is as baffled as to what is wrong. I was hoping some one else might have encountered something simlar and would be able to direct us in a general direction as to what it might be. Sorry to trouble you.

I'm sorry and understand what you mean by being frustrated when it comes to repairing problems such as the one you have. We run into problems like that all the time, but not every one of them have the same culprit. It would be nice to know what trouble code numbers keep popping up after they are cleared out.

Re: 2003 mercury sable GS wont start Sign In

Never could get them to give me the codes. There was one on the invoice PO 316. They ended up replacing the ECM and reprogrammed ECM with latest update. Thus eliminating a multiple list of problems. I had been trying to get rid of a miss by replacing spark plugs, wires, and coil pack 5 years ago to no avail. MPG drop from 28 mpg to 22 mpg. Turning itself off while going down the road at 70 mph, and then turning itself back on. Have had it back for about 2 weeks now . I waiting a little while longer before I say well done. I waiting to see if any of the other oddities that where happening come back. Like the radio turning itself on an off, and the left blinker running fast and then it would be OK for a period then act up again.

Are you saying that you have been driving this thing with a miss for 5 years?

It would come and go. But towards the end you could feel the car cough when driving. It was like a small jerk when it would miss.

The running and restarting issue is tricky. First check the ground on the distributor. Put a voltohm meter on milli-volts, Not ohms, and put the positive on the distributor hold down. put the negative on the negative terminal. You should get less then 2 milli-volts. Anything more say 0.005 or 0.006 volts and it is a bad distributor ground, you would need a jump cable from the dirtributor holddown to the negative battery terminal.

I don't know where you even came up with this nonsense on a motor that doesn't even have a distributor. What modern dist even requires a ground through the mounting?
