2004 civic 1.7 head gasket .

After a long ride the car started sputtering at a light 1/2 block from home . Parked it and in the morning found multiple mis fires for codes and a glob of oily gunk under the radiator cap . New compression tester found 120 psi , 120 , 100 & 90 on cylinders 1-2-3-4 and the radiator built some pressure from just doing the tests . Sounds like a bad head gasket but temp gauge doesn't over heat , no white smoke didn't use any coolant and will kinda idle and does accelerate . How can the car still drive with a major problem like that ?

Doc! The glob is enough, compression marginally enough to run lousy even if problem is slight it would run on 3+1/2 cylinders but isn't helping it. It might build pressure to cooling system if not super bad or exhaust pressures get in. A head gasket can leak tiny amounts anyway it seal or a LOT and be super obvious. Oil if it was is obvious trouble. What did spark plugs look like that you took out for the test? Always check they tell a story too. Don't let cars run way too long (you know this) that don't run well it's just adding to the list of things that will need work > you know that too, Tom

the plugs were sooty black , this car has over heated before and I'm surprised that gasket didn't fail already , taking it off the road today parking it in the back yard . It'll drive but I ain't going to punish it , if/when I try a fix I think the entire thing should be pulled and checked rather than just the head , or full replacement . It's not rusted out and they don't make them anymore and I just don't like newer cars . TY

It depends how bad you find the head could be an indicator of whether the block got damaged. I remember one mechanic said he would not do just the head gasket because once all that crap gets circulated you don't get it out . Cracked block crossed my mind too . Thanks ,

Can't know till there but agree with "crap" you can't get out you can try. Remove one or more freeze plugs OR some engines have plumbing threaded bolts on sides in middle of 4 if a 4cyl or each side of an 8cyl this new would be a hex bolt some could be other types. Why: Engine made new had to be blow out the crap is why those are there in the first place! Tom

I don't understand the correlation between junk in the cooling system and a blown head gasket. You can have a blown head gasket with a pure clean cooling system. The issue to be considered is if the extreme heat did damage to the block and bearings also. If any coolant actually got into the oil and the engine was run, then yes, the motor is junk.
