2005 Dodge Stratus SXT Timing belt broke Sign In

My timing belt broke on my 2005 Dodge Stratus SXT.
It has a 2.4 engine and 140,000 miles.
I have been calling around for quotes. Some say just the timing belt and pump while others are saying likely valve damage.
Some say if there is valve damage it will cost the same to replace the engine as to fix the valves.
I'm getting so many different quotes and suggestions from mechanics that I really don't know who is telling me the truth.
I appreciate any advice. How likely is it the valves are damaged and if so should I replace the engine?

Thank you

BM

It depends on if its a single overhead or dual. The single is interference, the dual is listed as non-interference but can have valve to valve damage....

It's not a matter of telling the truth. Some shops like to warn of all the dangers up front so there is no surprises and other shops prefer to gamble. They figure "why scare the customer over something that may not be" and if it's turns out that way then they were right, problem being is, if there is damage & the customer wasn't warned, now they are in the position of defending themselves against being accused of causing said damage.....

The answer is simple.....no one knows... All you can do is put a new belt on it and run a compression test. Everything needs to be put back into time to determine if damage was done or not......... Personally I haven't seen too many 2.4s with damage, but that is just my little corner of the world....

And yes on those, you really need to install a new water pump & idlers.....Don't cut corners on this job

Sidom was right just put new belt and water pump on and see if everything's fine and run a compression test or not but it will show if the engine will start or not if noe maybe the valve are demaged .

Good luck
