2005 cobalt start no start
|
|
|
My grandson was given this 2005 cobalt . The previous owner said it started running bad and he limped it home. It hasn't run in 4 years. My grandson cleaned the gas tank replaced the fuel pump and it will start and run really bad . But you cant throttle up the engine. It will die. After you have started it that day it wont run again until the next day. It has Fuel and spark we have verified that. But really scratching my head . Also wen trying to start sometimes it will have a small backfire out the throttle body. I'm thinking Jumped Time. Any Ideas ? Also thanks for allowing me to join and post here. God bless

4 years if outdoors is a horror by itself but let's move on. It didn't run right before and still doesn't. I missed seeing a fuel filter done for this. Either way I'd take it out, dump it out into glass container to see what it looks like then thru like a white paper towel also. New is called for anytime IMO you take one off let's get that out of the way. Fuel pressure test you can do I think some parts outlets now rent them for free (100% deposits) see if it's up to spec and HOLDS! For later don't neglect that brakes and loads of other things will be wasted sitting that long but let's get it running first, T

I guess I really didn't do a good Job in giving all info on this. So the Pump was replaced Tank cleaned Had a lot of trash in it. And Yes the filter was changed and lines flushed The Fuel rail with regulator was swapped out from a friends recked 2006 cobalt. It has a flooding condition when it doesn't start. Plugs come out wet. And you have to open the throttle to get it to fire. I believe it to be Timing. The thing I don't get is why it would only Start and run one time. It wont run again until the next day. I has sat for 6 hrs. after the first start on a day but it still wont start has to be the next day. A real head scratcher for this. Well take the front off the Engine next week. Thank You for your reply God Bless

Whooow! Don't start tearing an engine apart when you have no clue what the problem is. You neglected to post what engine this has an how many miles it has on it. It also appears you have not even scanned it for codes as yet. This is very important. You need to do a lot more testing before you start disassembling or replacing anything. Yes, you need a fuel pressure reading and you also need to test injector pulse using a noid light. Timing is very UNLIKELY to be the the problem here but a simple compression test would tell you that. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Agin i guess I just didn't explain. I have checked Fuel pressure it's 50psi I've checked Pulse both with a light and a Probe. No problem their. and for codes it has an ABS code. Don't remember the # It's going to be Valve Timing. Compression has been checked also. High was 118 and Low was 105. Compression 's not always Gona indicate a Valve Timing issue. Compression is a little low but then it has 186000 miles. Thank You for your reply. Just remember when you have popping back through the Carb or Throttle Body and you have conformation on all else. It's time to think about Valve Timing. Thanks Again God Bless

I'm sorry I still didn't give all the info I missed the Engine. It being a 2005 I just expected all to know it's a 2.2 I don't think the 2.4 came in until 2006. Sorry about that. OK it holds Fuel Pressure Thank You All God bless

More on the Fuel Pressure when it does start and run we have popped the accelerator to see if the Pump keeps up but when you try that it dies. and then no more running until the next day. This is the part that I can't understand. Start and run as long as you don't try to throttle up. And then when it quits you cant restart. Not till the next day. Thanks Again God Bless

From top: It wasn't running well 4 years ago and just parked? That alone probably finished off this engine? Oil will dry out, moisture inside bet you could see damage/pocking (now that it has run at all) from cylinder walls. Rubber can fail used anywhere, even a harmonic balancer. It's tough on things (anything) to just sit like that is open book what will fail next when or if you do get it going. That IMO and experience with improperly stored things if a lawn mower, T

Then you have some computer problems. At the very least you should be seeing a rich code and I would expect more. You probably should invoke a code by unplugging a sensor with the key on to see if the computer is capable of setting codes.

If you find that it does indeed set the code, the plug the sensor back in but don't clear the code from the computer at this time. Wait until the car acts up again and see if the code is still there at that point or if maybe the computer has reset.

Well my Grandson got back intown yesterday so this morning we checked a few more things. We unplugged the MAS sensor and the Throttle position sensor. Both showed up on the OBD scanner. So I guess the ECM is reading faults. Also I bought a new OBD Scanner. We put it on the car and it showed a code B1370-06 and said ignition short to ground. but looking it up on the web it could be several things. I just don't know. I think I may go to Mitchel and pay the 20 bucks for a month and get the schematics printed up for the ignition. It's strange how it starts up and runs with an occasional pop through the throttle body. But then an ignition short to ground could surly be the problem. Don't understand not being able to throttle up the engine. It started rain on us so we had to quit but when we can get back to it Ill be sure to post what we find if anything.

So just this - stray spark. It takes a little more to spark at a plug with compressed mixture inside so spark just knows to look for ground. Anything to do with the high voltage could be the reason. Some you can see if dark mist it with plain tapwater - I mean mist not soak. Most show up or even stall the engine - bingo, T

That is a Body Control code and it relates to the ignition switch. Not sure that this has anything to do with your problem. I'd be more interested in what codes you find in the ECM after the car has run and the problem shows up again. I'm trying to find out if the ECM might be losing all power and going into complete reset when the problem occurs. Do not clear the codes currently stored until you check this.

I do appreciate the help from BOTH and anyone else. We haven't erased any of the codes from the start. The only thing new is the Body Code. And that showed up with this new scanner I got. We found it before we started the engine earlier this morning. So it was there all the time I guess. Because we hadn't run it from the other day. So my question is does this mean there could be a short somewhere causing the problem.`

Hammer I'm not sure but I think your talking to me. As I said the ECM has the same codes as before. The only new One is the body Code. We did unplug a couple of sensors. The ECM picked it up and let us know. We haven't erased any codes. If this were a carburetor and points car Id have it fixed. I did some circle track racing back years ago so I know a little about engines'. But I'm 77 years now and its all passed me by. I hope I have answered you. Not sure I understand totally. God Bless

Has the engine run and quit again since the codes were set? Did the sensor codes remain in memory after that? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yes the engine has Run after the Codes were set. They remain. Also I think I said before it will set and Run as long as it has gas in the tank. It just runs like crap. The occasional Pop and so on. Also I just got new info from my grandson this morning. He ran into the previous owner last night and was told . By the owner when he was driving it just out of nowhere started running crazy. he told him he had a friend check it for codes after limping it home. And it had some Throttle body code. Don't remember just that it was throttle body. He said he replaced the throttle body but still would not start. So here comes my Grandson never could get it to run. Because it sat for 4yrs. he decided to drop the tank clean it and put a new fuel pump in and change the filter in the line. I asked why he did this and he said because it had sat for so long. Well after doing so it starts and runs now but very difficult to get it to run. You don't just turn the key and it starts up. You have to stay with it and play with the throttle. Once running however sounding like you know what. It doesn't quit until you turn the key off. Your Help is much appreciated. God Bless
