2006 Ford 6.0 knocks bad Sign In

I have a 2006 Ford 6.0 Diesel in a E450Cutaway van. The van has 105,000 miles with an automatic.When it's cold it starts very hard . When it does start the engine will knock like crazy. Sounds really bad like it's going to hammer itself to death.The engine high idle will not kick on and it sounds this way for at least 20 minutes. A couple years ago the egr cooler went out and flooded the radiator with oil. What could be causing this rough condition. It also smokes bad with blue smoke never did that before.Please help !!!!!

Get the trouble codes run and check the FICM. They can cause this to happen pretty easily. Not only will the FICM control the injectors as directed by the PCM, it amplifies the voltage from the 12v your truck uses to the 48v the injectors need to work right. Get it to start dropping around 36-40 volts and it will do this.

Thanks Nick for replying I have one other question whats the FICM and how do I check it ? I do have a scan tool from gynesis just no engine lights are on ?

The FICM is mounted on your left valve cover. It is basically an amplifier to turn the 12v power of your truck into the 48v it takes to trigger your injectors properly. The ECM controls it. If it fails it usually throws codes. I would watch the PID list on the scanner and see if it will show you the high pressure readings from the ICP sensor. It may also show the voltage at injectors. Haven't played with many on my scanner and been a while since the last one, so not sure exactly what you can view on it. It may take an o-scope to watch voltage on the injectors themselves. Now that I think of it, have you verified that your glow plug system is operating properly? Thats an easy way to make a diesel start like crap.
