Hi everyone.. This is my first time fixing a car and need help. It's a 2007 Honda Pilot with 220,000 miles. Check engine light is on and I am getting error codes for misfire (300 to 306). Spark plugs, coils, air, fuel - all checked and working fine. Compression is very high - 2 of them are showing 175 - 180 PSI and rest 4 are from 200-240 PSI. Haynes manual says should be between 135 and 163 psi. Spark plug wells had oil in it, so I changed valve covers gasket and seals, but I guess some oil got into cylinders. Timing - I aligned the crankshaft timing mark with the pointer. Timing mark on front cam (radiator side), is little behind the pointer on belt cover for cylinder 1. And timing mark on the back cam is way off the pointer. Have attahced pictures for reference. Am I checking the timing correct way? and does this show that timing is off? First off, you don't have 200-240 PSI. It's not possible so you need to find out what was done wrong with testing. Second, that engine is out of time and it's doubtful the compression is anywhere near normal.
Spark plugs, coils, air, fuel - all checked and working fine. To make sure that the compression tester is ok, I used it on another car and got a normal reading (150-155 psi). I did a cold engine test, with the throttle wide open, cranked it until needle stopped climbing and got these reading. 2 of the cylinders are still in 175-185 range, but rest are above 200. For spark plugs and coils, I used a spark plug tester with a testing light. Checked the fuel pressure, steady around 45. Fuel injectors - I checked if they are clicking constantly while car is running. Air - I have a new MAP sensor, 10-11 HG on the scanner while idling. Also seems like I have a clogged catalytic converter on bank 1. Bank 1 runs rich but when I remove A/F sensor, it gets normal. Checked A/F sensor also by swapping with bank 2 sensor, they are working fine. Please let me know if I can do any more tests to make sure spark, air, and fuel are working.

There are a few issues here. Depending what kind of spark tester you used, it may not be accurate. If you have the adjustable type and set it to around 40K, that will give you a real test but if you're using one of those strobe light, it means nothing when not under compression. Your fuel pressure is too low .... 380-430 kPa (3.9-4.4 kgf/sq.cm, 55-63 psi) Hearing a fuel injector click just means the solenoid works. I am using this tester, is this good enough? http://autoforums.carjunky.com/photos/pic/539QgYg7/1631.jpg I will check the fuel pressure again, I might be forgetting the actual number but when I checked it, it was within the range as per Haynes repair manual. But I will check it again. I am going to replace the timing belt and then adjust the valves again. Will take out the injectors and test them for clogs. Any suggestions on the high compression? How do I start diagnosing that?

No, that spark tester will not tell you anything about the capacity of the coil. This is the type that I was referring to. Hello, I changed the timing belt and miss fires are gone. Idling and running great, no check engine light. But I still have 2 problems: 1. High compression: cylinder 1 to 6 - 235, 195, 225, 210, 215, 230. These numbers are way higher than what is given in the service manual. 2. Negative LTFT: Both banks showing negative 10.94% Any suggestions on what I can try next? And is it risky to drive with high compression? Thanks!
