2008 Ford Escape Engine Noise
|
|
|
2008 Ford Escape 3.0L V6 85,000 miles I am having problems when I start my 2008 Ford Escape and the engine is cold. I get a non metallic knock, the knock continues until the engine is warm. My oil consumption has also increased. From what I have read these are the symptoms of a bad PCV valve. I replaced the PCV valve, the first cold start I had no engine noise. I thought I had successfully fixed the problem with the PCV valve replacement. Now the noise has returned. So I had one good start after the PCV valve was replaced, every other start I have had the metallic noise. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

Sorry my bad thinking KM'S .. Haven't had much problems with oil comsumption we have had rear main seals go on them. This is caused by PCV freezing in the winter time and the crank case having no ventilation(build pressure). We have had problems with lifters in a few of the 3.0L engines. And also VCT solenoids, a faulty VCT solenoid would trigger a engine light though. How much oil is it using? .. also make sure it's not leaking it(filter leaking, drain plug, seals and etc). There is also this TSB for noise FORD: 2008 Escape, Mariner ISSUE: Some 2008 Escape and Mariner vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine, may exhibit a grinding or rattling noise with the engine running, more noticeable at idle. ACTION: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition. SERVICE PROCEDURE - Check the vehicle build date:
- If the vehicle was built from 4/27/2007-4/30/2007, go to Step 2.
- If not, follow normal workshop manual diagnostics. Refer to WSM, Section 100-04.
- Remove the starter, Refer to WSM, Section 303-06.
- Inspect the starter drive for loose washers and/or the snap ring not seated in the shaft groove. Replace as necessary.
- Install the starter, Refer to WSM, Section 303-06.

Thanks for the reply! It uses about a quart about every 1000 - 1500 miles. I have checked the oil filter, drain plug, and did a visual inspection of the engine (areas that I could see) from the top/underside and there are no apparent leaks. This noice is not a grinding or rattling, it sounds non metallic. It seems like the noise is coming mostly from the bank of cylinders closest to the radiator. To further narrow it down it is on the right side of that bank of cyliners (standing at the front of the vehicle looking towards the rear of the vehicle). I can't tell if it is coming from that cylinder or something else in that area. I would think maybe it could be an injector, ignition coil, or spark plug but it goes away when the engine gets warm. I would think if it was one of these the sound would be heard regardless of hot or cold?

may be a lifter i would know if i could hear it, but im not actually there. does the sound rate change with RPM?(faster) I would have it put on a hoist to get a good visual make %100 sure it's not leaking. Pull the inspection plate off bellhousing and inspect for signs of engine oil. Take off rubber snorkal for air box and open air box to look for any signs of oil. If engine light is on get it scanned and post the codes here.

I took it to a dealership and they determined it to be leaking exhaust header gasket. It kind of makes sense, I smelled slight exhaust in the engine compartment when I was trying to troubleshoot. When the engine/exhaust header gets warm it seals itself. I did not get the dealer to repair yet they wanted $1000 to replace a $10 gasket. Does anyone have an idea of how involved this job is? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

depends if it's front or rear exhaust manifold(s) or converter gasket.. both exhaust manifolds are not nice to remove since they are burried you LH side takes little longer then the RH. Ford SLTS are 3.6 for left 3.2 for right. Remember these are warranty SLTS (service labour times) and retail labour times will be more. Warranty usally pays about 1/2~3/4 of the time it acutally takes.

hi, just joined and hoping it is ok to post here as i have a similar problem. zmame indicated he might be able to identify issue if hearing engine noise. i have posted http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBFbNPbWVF8 an issue with my escape 2008... loud engine tick/nock. looking for any guidance on whether i can do anything. i am planning to tow to a service station for diagnostics. from what i gather from searching internet for FordEscapes... if major issues with valves/pistons/bearings, it may be best to just replace engine(remanuf) vs repairing.
