2012 Tucson leaking coolant into crankcase

I have a 2012 Tucson Limited with 2.4l engine. It died on the freeway. No coolant in the radiator. It all ended up in the crankcase. I drained the coolant/oil and when I put coolant into the radiator, at about half way, it pours out from the crankcase. Any ideas on where to look would be appreciated. I checked the oil cooler and it is fine.

You're pretty much wasting your time if this thing died on the highway from coolant in the oil. It's already done too much internal engine damage. Yes. Added coolant to radiator and it pours out the crankcase.

The most like source is the engine oil cooler but as I said, driving it with coolant in the oil will destroy the motor almost immediately. If you drove it until it died, you can bet on it. Oil cooler is fine and not leaking. I was hoping it may be an easy fix to see if the motor will run. I can't find any suggestion online or utube. thought I would try here. Thanks

I'm just asking OP here and Hammer. Does the radiator's end tank take the ENGINE OIL in and return it? IDK so asking. If I wanted to cool engine oil I would make or use a separate smaller radiator and place it in front of other heat radiating things separate from mixing there with coolant? It's moot now I agree this engine is done with now so asking how and why anyone would use a tank in "engine" coolant. Sorry for sounding a but sarcastic but if I saw that (I haven't) it would induce vomiting without putting a finger down my throat as too many things do as I get older seems like STUPID ideas for designs still get made and nobody (human) looked at the cad-cam of it signed off on making it that way would end up a disaster. Just me maybe but who's asleep at the switch if you will on this vehicle? They are not newbies to making things that worked out OK and lasted OK early (decades ago) came with wildly long warranties if you serviced them at dealers on time + or by miles too you've passed that so I said it's "moot" now, Tom

I replaced it with a new one and tested the old one. Both not leaking.

Thanks. Now I know why you asked if the wrong filler cap was used back a few. This wouldn't be fast thru an other flaw/gasket to fill up crankcase by any idea of a machine I've ever known of, Tom

It is a small unit that bolts onto the oil filter housing.

Dave - I'm lost and really am a tech (slow to done) for ages. Fix anything else too. Engines with a sump of oil - all I've ever known of well enough pump oil from that pan one up in order thru most critical needs to a top and gravity drips back to pan to do over again thru a head, thru holes in block sealed by a head gasket. IF that plugged up return oil can't return is one thing - rare now. Coolant is also passing thru that gasket seals compression away from oil and coolant could be a leak any which way it seals. If busted, cracked or warped parts something horrible like an overheat is the common reason. A factory defect of a bubble in casting parts new would be so rare to bust now for no reason you've said of some wild damage, cracking bang from the engine IDK. Oil just doesn't swap back and forth with coolant fast if ever isn't so common. You don't sound like you don't get it but it's not making sense to me yet what else is possible now some super rare flaw in original cast parts showed up?? Filler caps to things are marked, a color or icons on them. I don't see anything else in use. Some other outrageous thought because it's been plenty cold at night now where I am is if an engine froze without antifreeze it would crack almost all at water jackets. That could explain it. Is that possible?? By chance was checking out a neighbor's boat that did freeze an automotive engine made for marine use, uses raw water it's in to cool it when in water. This time of year or earlier you drain them dry apparently prior owner did not more than one core/freeze plus were already faked with rubber plugs (sold knowning that) nice trailer got it for $150 total! It's go parts fit a zillion others so is worth if trashed we can't prove this time of year in MA there nowhere it's doesn't freeze outdoors or unheated place so you drain things. Never mind that but it's cracked yet to find in Spring for sure can't pressure check a boat engine like vehicles. That you could try at the rate might hear it or air out oil dipstick or open oil filler cap?? This is uncommon to me all bets off if it's possible it froze already said a factory flaw would or should have failed right away or this is the worst bad luck that engine ever had with my understanding how you describe it, Tom (no motives sport - here to help you figure it out)

I'm in Southern California, so no freezing problems. I was thinking it may be a head gasket issue, but when I pour in water into the radiator, at about half or 3/4 level full, it will start pouring out (alot) from the crank case (oil drain plug). I've never seen it pour out that much with a blow head gasket. Maybe I have a cracked head or block. Not sure. I thought there may be a gasket or seal in there somewhere that can go out and the coolant can pour out and mix with the oil. I may have to check the head gasket and go from there.

Right. I can't see how it's so fast by gasket alone?? It's why I'm lost. Been the coastal length of CA, was 1967 sport but don't forget it. Best conditions for a metal machine (vehicles) parts is inland So. Calif. I predate zip codes :-) Still thinking IDK yet what else so do check with pressure what air then comes out where. Take plugs out again see what you can on them and under pressure. This problem you have would drive me nuts - "not a long drive" if you get that, smirk, Tom

Yeah Jim, I told him about the warranty extension but that didn't say anything about coolant leaks and I assume it would be rejected for that reason. I still would like to know how he came to the conclusion that the oil cooler was not the problem. It sounds like just because it doesn't have an external leak, he thinks it is fine. I replaced the oil cooler with a new one. Before installng the new oil cooler, I blocked off both ends and added air pressure under water to see if there was a leak. No leak. Also tested the old one after I took it off. No leak (air bubbles). That is why I say the oil cooler if fine. If I missed something, please let me know. I am not a mechanic, and am youtubeing alot of things. Thanks

Well, if all that is true it doesn't leave many options for a leak that severe. Even a blown head gasket or cracked head would not be that extreme. About the only thing that could account for that amount of leakage is a major hole in the block and if you're not in cold weather, I don't know how that would happen. I guess I will have to take it into the mechanic. A busted block is beyond my abilities....Thank you all. I will update on what he says. I hope I don't need to replace the motor....

Oh, I think you will definitely have to replace the motor, simply because it was driven with a crankcase full of coolant until it stopped. HT, i was just adding that , saw that you had mentioned it, thats what prompted me to do so. It mentions Engine failure, Connecting rod problem. It stalled at highway speed, he doesn't know if it will even run, its dumping coolant. Seems it may be related. FWIW

Yes, I saw it was covering rod bearing failure but it may be a different story when the bearing failure was due to coolant introduction. He seems to be still under the impression that it will be drivable if he fixes the coolant leak. Chicken or the egg? Threw rod, coolant dumping or dumping coolant, engine failed. Since these are known for catastrophic engine failure, I'd be surprised it if isn't already as well. Obviously this needs to be torn down to the point of failure to see what/who's to blame Hopefully it works out for him.
